Getting rid of old banger

I'm not sure why people are offended/being offensive about it. It's our 3rd car. We don't need 3 cars anymore, and as it only gets driven once a month tops, it's not really worth the £700 a year it costs to keep on the road.
There is a little rust in the area where the spoiler meets the boot lid. Other than that, no rust or dings. I was quoted £300 by a trusted mechanic for a refurbished engine head unit and £80 for the seals. The battery needs changing (as its not used but does get trickle charged when needed). It only runs on 3 cylinders because of fluid getting into the spark plugs through the perforated head. The alloys aren't in great condition. It could probably do with new pads and discs. All in all it needs about £1k spending on it to bring it back up to good mechanical condition. But for less than 1000 miles a year it's not worth spending another £1700!!
It won't be replaced, as it doesn't need to be, and neither of us has the time or inclination to break it ourselves. DH wants rid.
I know perfectly well how to clean and valet a car - wasn't so long back that I'd spend 4 hours on a weekend doing mine with clay bar and everything. Our daughter is too little to leave for that long so I've been paying somebody to do the other 2, but it didn't seem worth it for the vectra which rarely turns a wheel.Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -

Nope; here's another vote for ebay.
OH had a knackered rover 200 diesel. Needed and new clutch and window. Lots of rust.
Best scrap offer was £150. She got £280 on ebay and did *nothing* to it. No cleaning, no preparation.
Still was bought by a scrapper who would still make a profit taking it to bits even though it went for nearly double scrap value0 -
As above although with ebay, you will only get what someone is willing to pay for it.
The SRI badge is the reason it might sell to a boy racer type as someone already pointed out. 99p start, no reserve, plenty of pics and all faults listed so they can't moan and you should be ok.
you might not gain that much but at the same time, you should lose much (based on the guaranteed £200) either. What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
ahh not the radio "head unit" but the engine head ahh
not a £30 job to renew seals
give it a clean and put it on gumtree/ebay might get a bit more than 200Sealed pot challenger # 10
1v100 £15/3000 -
Certainly sounds like it is time for it to go.notanewuser wrote: »There is a little rust in the area where the spoiler meets the boot lid. Other than that, no rust or dings. Could try eBay / Gumtree and the like but personally I can't see you getting much more than £200 for it unless you want the hassle of breaking it up yourself.0 -
Theres a few SRI's recently sold on ebay for spares/repairs for round £200-£300. So if you would rather not scrape it stick on it ebay.
If you list it as a 30 day classified advert with a realistic price it will cost £15 and wait for someone to buy it.
If you list it as a 10 day auction you won't get charged as much to list, but you will have to pay ebay fees and possible get messed around by wasters.
Scrape its worth £120 ish depending on the scrapy at the time.
Choice is yours"Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!0 -

Who's getting/being offensive about it? Do you know what offensive means? All I can see is people making helpful suggestions based on the information you provided.
The way you described it in the first post it sounded like there were a couple of easily fixable problems with it but that it was taxed, tested and insured and you'd just lost interest in a perfectly sound car.
If it's as bad as you say then clean it up and......Ebay0 -
http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_from=R40&Model=Vectra&_nkw=vauxhall+vectra+rear+light&_dmpt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&rt=nc&LH_ItemCondition=4
Say £20 each and same for the front and same for Fogs... = £120
Leather Interior seems to go for around £200 - £300 so priced for quick sale £150 shouldn't be hard.

Say £100 each bumper
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VAUXHALL-VECTRA-C-PASSENGER-FRONT-DOOR-COMPLETE-IN-SILVER-Z157-2002-TO-2009-/170937266883?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27cca7b2c3&_uhb=1
Doors for say £50 each = £200
Boot, Bonnet, mirrors ..... etc.
You are soon well into £1000+
You then need to pay to scrap it..... but this is just stuff you can take off with a basic tool kit..... If you have the storage it's going to return a lot more than selling the whole lot for scrap....
I've been chasing a new boot for my partners Honda and I'm damned if I can find anything less than £150.....0
