Getting rid of old banger

One of our cars is now 11 years old and not in a very good way. It's used only for trips to the tip really. DH had it from new. Parts of it are too good to scrap (scrap value about £200) but it would need some work to put it on the road properly (head unit is perforated, seals gone on the boot, mushrooms growing in the boot etc). Has full leather seats which are in really good condition.

Don't really want to break the car ourselves, but would like to get a bit more for it if possible.

Any ideas what's best to do?

  • Stick it on eBay with a 99p starting bid or at whatever scrap value is. Do a good description with lots of decent photos. Someone will have it.

What kind of car is it? Some scrap really well if they are an upgrade edition of a common car, but leather seats in a jag for example, aren't an easy sell.

Get busy for half a day, clean it to perfection, lots of good, detailed pictures and get it on ebay.

How much do you think we might get for it?

  • Give it a thorough clean and ebay it. Some barry boy will have it for it's SRI nonsense.

    Head unit - £30

    Boot seal - £10

The rest sounds like the car just needs a bloody good clean! Certainly not worth scrapping. What else is wrong with it? If you have had it since new, sometimes its better the devil you know (fix it and keep rather than get something else that could potentially throw up a load of problems)

I agree. Surely that can't be all that's wrong with it. Fix those two problems, get it serviced, and either sell it as a going concern or keep it.

Has it any rust or dented panels.
If the answer to this question is no, then it is too good to scrap, and needs £20 spent on valeting materials (which you can then use on other cars) and a few hours hard work with vacuum cleaner, various brushes, interior shampoo, lots of hot water (use two large buckets, one to rinse the dirty sponge in).
For cleaning alloy wheels, I use the Astonish pink kitchen cream cleaner in a tub, applied with a gentle scourer sponge.
It sounds as though your car needs an owner who cares for it.
My Mondeo is 12 years old, and its condition (inside, out, under the bonnet) would put many 4 year old cars to shame.
Now, get out there and clean it;)

If you can get rid of it after and store in the meantime, a alternative is selling the more obvious parts.

Alloys, Leather Interior, Lights ..... even ashtray's.... gear/handbrake covers, dash vents ..... front and rear bumpers.... anything that can be upgraded or easily damaged (someone might pay £20 for a damaged air-vent...

Someone on eBay will need almost every removable part that doesn't require a engine hoist to get it out.
