My daughter recieved her first ( bless!) tax disc reminder last week. Price for 12 mth - £100. Ok she thought. She went online today to renew & it has changed to £ 115. Now i am guessing the budget must have changed things but will she still be able to get the 12 mths for £ 100 if she goes to the PO? I think its a bit wrong in a way cos if she went to the PO with a cheque she would have been embarrassed to be turned away for not having enough! Anyone had the same problem?

It's £115 as per the last budget. Probability of getting it for £100 at the Post Office zero I should think.

I'm afraid to say that it is the rate on the day of renewal. If the Chancellor moves the goalposts just beforehand - TSM, as they say.

No way to get it at the pre-2007 price I'm afraid. As soon as the Chancellor sits down the prices change.

Are you sure the reminder only arrived last week though? I'd have thought the reminders had the post-2007 budget on now?!

Or the easier way is to go on This site, Fill in the Vehicle enquiry with your daughters car details and it will tell you how much it will be.

Yes defo came last week, thats why the different amount surprised us. Course it was sent 2nd class PPI so no date stamp. Either it shoddy DVLA or shoddy Royal Mail. I dunno now, after my other post, i think my daughter will just have to have a moan of displeaseure about the chancellor like the rest of us & cough up the extra!

We got caught out by the increase last year. Tried to renew tax day after the budget and the PO wouldn't accept the rate on form said we had to pay new rate. Had to go home and get another cheque.

This year being a bit wiser we renewed tax a day before the budget at the price on form.

Tax inevitably goes up in Budget so be one step ahead and renew the day before.

Due to recent budget changes, please note that your rate of Vehicle Excise Duty may vary from that shown on your V11 or V85/1 reminder. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

  • At the counter in the PO she'll be asked to pay the new rate in force since the budget.

The PO cannot retro-charge a legislative change.

£115 is £2.21 a week...a 29p per week increase on the previous charge for that vehicle banding.

Also...if you are registering a NEW car for the first time, the DVLA first reg' fee goes up to £50 on May 1st...regardless of when your car was ordered. Another legislative change from the budget and the new fee is applied for all cars registered in the UK from 1st May onwards, a £12 rise from the current £38 fee.
