I liked similar books when I was your son's age. I agree with the suggestion of Diane Wynne Jones, not just the Chrestomanci books but I loved all of her books. In fact I'm re-reading them now.

John Wyndham is another good author for classic science fiction. He might also like to try an Agatha Christie or two.

I enjoyed Great Expectations at that age, but found other Dickens books a bit depressing and dull.
  • Not unusual at all :D Both my kids have been avid readers from an early age and I think its great that yours is such a confident reader.

How about the following (all series)...?
    Percy Jackson (by Rick Riordan)
    Heroes of Olympus (Rick Riordan)
    Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Lemony Snicket Series of Unfortunate Events
    Spartan Warrior (Michael Ford)

Or if he's into any tv there are loads of novels from Dr Who, Star Wars, Star Trek etc

  • Septimus Heap series by Angie Sage , magic and adventure.

Warriors series by Erin Hunter , warrior cat gangs , much better than it sounds!

Hunger games , my 10 year old loved 1 and 2 but found 3 difficult.

The golden acorn. , free on kindle and very good.

Steve backshalls book. , tiger wars.
  • I don't know if it's a bit 'old' - but you could try some of the Issac Asimov books.. I, Robot is a good start

Ursula LeGuin, especially The Wizard of Earthsea quartet
Any of the old "adventure" stories like 39 Steps or Kidnapped
Carl Hiassen has a series for younger readers
The Once & Future King by TH White
I would also look at classic detective novels, especially Sherlock Holmes
  • ohh anne mccafferey dragons of pern series, forgot them before
    Nonny mouse and Proud!!

  • Has he tried the Bartemeus Trilogy?
If you found this post useful please will you click "thank you"? It cheers me up. :j
  • Do look at other Terry Pratchetts though. Try the older childs book section. The one I already mentioned was 'Only You Can Save Mankind' but there are a lot more.
You did not mention Pratchett in your original list so assumed they hadnt been tried. As I said do look for more titles of his.
    Back on the trains again!

  • I would like to *highly* recommend the "Riftwar Saga" by Raymond E Fiest - the series comprises of Magician, Silverthorn, and A Darkness At Sethanon.

The Drizzt Do'Urden books by R A Salvatore are also very good IMO.

Terry Pratchett's 'Nation' is a good one, and Roald Dahl wrote some books and short stories for teenagers which might be suitable (I remember reading 'The Hitchhiker' when I was younger and being surprised it was by Dahl - it wasn't like his kids books).
