  • Hello, I did this last year and thought it was great having the money at the end of the year to go towards Christmas treats for both myself and my hubby. Although, I can only do it from March to November as DH's work is seasonal.

Anyway, can I join in again this year?

Checking in with an update, seems to have been a little slow but I'm up to £32.

At the current rate of £16 per month should still be able to reach that £200 by the end of the year.

Will take cash to the shops instead of cards more often, increases the odds ;)

I got 2 today so I succumbed and decided to find out how many I have so far. Pleasantly surprised to find I've got 14 (£28)!

Quick question for seasoned £2 collectors (apologies if its been posted elsewhere but I haven't been through all 700+ posts) - what happens to your coins once you decide to spend them? I mean, do you spend the coins themselves or change them for notes at the bank or deposit them in your bank account or what? I'm asking because when I do reach my goal the item I have in mind to buy would be better bought on a credit card so I can have some protection if it's faulty. BUT I bank with Smile (Co-op) which is online only and there isn't a Co-op bank near to me that I can take my coins to.
I tend to bag them up and pay them into the bank. So you could consider opening a simple deposit account with a local bank - just for your £2 stash.

Another option is to use them gradually for your shopping instead of a debit card, and then transfer the equivalent amount into a separate online account (which you resist the temptation to raid  ). Handing over 5 x £2 coins at the till isn't too embarrassing - and then shuffle £10 from your current account to your "locked" account.

Remember the aim is to save money in a way which works best for you, there's no rules about when you can bank / cash them in.
