sky box suddenly noisy

The box is at least 4/5 yrs old, its making a loud noise, a bit like the sound of a fan running.

Any ideas please?

    I've been Money Tipped!
It probably is a fan that's got old and the bearings are knackered, when they go like that in PC's they suddenly get very noisy.

Talk to sky about a replacement.

  • Yes, is just like my PC fan went wonky, it wont cause any harm to use it for a while will it? overheat or such?

Sky will charge you £65 for a call out and a recon box, so don't call them. Get one free on freegle or cheaps as chips on ebay, and swap it yourself.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

The older Sky+ (non HD) & early HD boxes were quite noisy, used to get quite a lot of service calls because the customer thought the box was faulty because of the noise they made, the newer HD boxes are better insulated against noise.
I don't think the is a fan in the boxes so the noise is more likely the Hard Drive, have you had any 'odd' happenings with the box like failed recordings, programmes half recorded ect.

You can use it until it fails completely, but do be aware that when this happens you'll then be without any TV at all until you get a replacement.

If it's the fan, simply peel off the centre label and put a drop of light oil on the spindle.

There has been some odd behaviour from it for a while now, sort of freezing/still pic for a couple of seconds. also failed recordings.

The odd noise stopped BTW, very odd, but its time for a new one soon I bet!

The hard drive is about to expire then.

Like me, check online and see if you are entitled to a free replacement box. SKY sent it out within 2 days and I did a self-install.

Sounds like the PSU (Power Supply Unit) is about to fail if you're getting odd happenings from the box, these can be replaced but on a box of that age it wouldn't be worth it.
You can try & call Sky to blag a discounted/free service call but then you'd be back to square one as you'd get a reconditioned box and,in my experience, the's no guarantee that the fault on that box would be fixed,or you could buy off E-Bay but again no guarantee or take advantage of one of Sky's offers or try & blag a upgrade.
