Miserable royal Mail

Just had to go pick up a Birthday card sent to my son due to insufficient postage, its was only owing 9p but they put another quid on as a fee for not delivering your post and making you go get it yourself
It seems it didn't make it as a letter due to it having a small birthday badge stuck on it in one corner so was elevated into the world of small packet for which the extra cost at first class would have been another 30p
The lesson here is avoid buying/sending cards with badges as a letter now is only allowed to be 5mm thick. I just dug out my trusty digital micrometer and measured my letter it was 6.2mm in about 15% of its area. just 1.2 lousy mm over!
They even have a little slot to show you if its too thick, was tempted to stamp on the offending corner so it then fitted and insist they now deliver it for free.
Miserable Royal mail birthday scrooges. Bah humbug on you!

Cards that I have bought for Christmas usually have a notice on the back that says if it is a large letter. So I blame the person who sent it to you, not Royal Mail.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0

I don't contest them doing their duty as it stands.. but 5mm is ridiculous, 8 at least, or a total limit figure derived from multiplying the 3 dimensions (within limits).0 -

You do not have to go and get it yourself, You can return the card with the fee or simply pay it online. In both cases the letter will be delivered when the fee has been paid.

The 5mm "Large letter" sizing has been in place for at least 2 years now
I just dug out my trusty digital micrometer and measured my letter it was 6.2mm in about 15% of its area. just 1.2 lousy mm over!
1.2mm or to put it another way, 24% over the limit.
They even have a little slot to show you if its too thick,
And if the person sending the card had used this "little slot", the problem would have been avoided.

My Mom for some reason last year posted our Christmas cards (we live close to each other), she sent 3 separate cards and one got detained at the delivery office because it was just slightly over and was a large letter. Hubby wasn't very happy as he went to get it.
My Mom hadn't noticed that it had "large letter" on the back. :mad:Striving to clear the mortgage before it finishes in Dec 2028 - amount currently owed - £24,616.090 -
A few points.

Yes probably in time for the next birthday

and we are supposed to remember every little detail in life? common sense suggests a simple card is a letter not a parcel

1.2mm or to put it another way, 24% over the limit. I will remind Uncle to take his micrometer to the card shop next time.

And if the person sending the card had used this "little slot", the problem would have been avoided. I am sure he would if there was one fitted to a post box but I suppose as it seemed to fit the slot on the box he assumed it to be OK.

I send out about 10 large letter items a day, but I think I'll just stick normal letter stamps on now. I can't be expected to remember every detail, after all.
Seriously though, this is very common knowledge. Id rant about the wally that didn't apply the correct postage rather than RM doing their job.0 -
I'm not certain, but I think the sizing for letters etc has actually been in place since 2006 - so it's not just happened in the past two years or so.0

Now you're just being silly

Thats right its not a parcel, its a LARGE letter, you seem to be confused by this concept.

Being silly again, Uncle could always just use the sizing guides that are provided at every Post Office to check the size before posting.

I am sure he would if there was one fitted to a post box but I suppose as it seemed to fit the slot on the box he assumed it to be OK.By your logic then I could post something as large as a VHS tape or DVD player and not be expected to get charged for sending a parcel.
was tempted to stamp on the offending corner so it then fitted and insist they now deliver it for free. But that would be even more silly as you would have ruined your sons card and badge, how very mean of you.And you still wouldve had to pay the fee to get the card off them to stamp on it.

Yes,miserable RM, what meanies for people not following some simple rules in place to ensure that they are not taking stuff all round the country that does not have the correct postage on it."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0
