I always clean out my filters in tank water. Personally I think the biorb's look nice but are difficut to clean. Generally speaking you are better off with a conventional tank as it has a greater surface area. Make sure you reasearch properly and I strongly recommend you do a fishless cycle before getting any fish. I've only had my tank six months but haven't lost a single fish which I'm very proud of. Went into a shop yesterday which actually had a card saying 'it is common to lose a few fish to start with but do persevere' Well it may well be common but it sure isn't necessary!!! Oh and if the filter is a bit noisy don't turn it off at night! You wouldn't believe how many people do that.

    Hi All

Wow thanks for the replies!! Your great!!!

Basill - checked out that website charterhouse - really good prices!! will be ordering from there I think!! Not sure what chubunkins are even after a google search!!!

Simate - thanks for the photos they're fab!!! Not sure a tank that big will fit in my sons room though!!! Not going to show him it either - he will want one for sure!! Will look for other coldwater fish though.

Pulliptears - thanks will keep that in mind when washing them out.

Chris25 - what ceramic material? Sorry I don't have a clue total amateur!!

Scat - what is a fishless cycle - do you mean leave it on for a while without any fish - if so how long? Really don't mind waiting as I would be horrified if my sons fish was to die!!

    One other thing

If I buy a babyorb - coldwater with halogen is there anything else I need?
Fish food - which is best - how ofen do I feed them?

And is everyone sure I can put two goldfish (and maybe later add a different cold water fish) in a babybiorb? Consumermonkey you've got me worried they be squashed!!

Maybe I need a plant and stone? They have them on the charterhouse website.
  • Hi, I have a biorb I found one of my local pet shops were doing a good deal and offering a changing led light part of the deal but six months later the pump went but biorb did change the next day. Also there is some noise to the pump which you do get use to.

    Good luck
    Nice to save.
  • Sorry about the confusion with pets at home. They must have had a sale on when I was last there.

The I-light is an LED light rather than a halogen bulb. The halogen bulb gets hot.
The halogen will cost a few pounds to replace.

The i-light is as I mentioned LED based, with three high powered white LED's and a single blue LED. these phase according to the program you set from moonlight to daylight over a 24hour period. LED's don't produce much heat and they should last almost a lifetime. the phasing of light slowly from dark to full light is supposed to be closer to a natural daylight condition and is supposed to be less stressful to the fish.

Goldfish are supposed to have approx 10 gallons of water per fish to live happily any as the bi-orb30 is only 8 gallons this is really not big enough for one, let alone two goldfish. I know the box has lots of goldies in the pictures, but they are deceiving.

I bought a baby bi-orb in December and this is quite a small tank and only really suitable for a few neon's or a couple of guppies. The Bi-orb 30 is a better bet. I now have a Bi-ube (35 litre cylinder type tank) and a 55 litre glass tank. Great fun to start and am enjoying keeping the firat animals successfully in my life (at the ripe age of 36!!) The baby bi-orb is currently in the garage awaiting time to be put on ebay.

They're the 'stones' that you put at the bottom - they're made of ceramic and have little holes in. When you first get the biorb you get a sachet of stuff to put in the tank and this contains the bacteria which gradually accumulate in the holes. These help keep the tank clean ;)

thanks homeworker - hope the pump noise isn't too noisy for my son to sleep - also as you can't switch it off at night time is it safe? Do all the biorbs need to be switched on all night even the cold water ones??

Thanks Consumer Monkey - the LED light sounds better I think.

I telephoned the fish store and asked how many fish I could keep in a babybiorb and they advised 2 (up to 2inches) and in the 30ltr 3-4 (up to 2inches) would you say this is correct - i'm really not wanting huge fish just tiny ones - can you mix goldfish with guppies and neons?

Basil - I like those fish very pretty - might get one goldfish and one of shubkins and a neon or guppie!!! Can they all live together OK?

Just a note in case nobody has mentioned this .. I bought one of these for my son two yaers ago .. and he has it in is bedroom ... we went for the tropical ...

Anyway ... the pump supplied in the kit failed after a year .. and was noisy .. by noisy I mean you could hear it .. I placed it on a little sponge pad to deaden the vibration .. the better one I got to replace it is silent as it has little rubber 'legs' ... hopefully it will last longer ... the orb was fine for the day it had without a pump ...

These are very good and mine has been safely running non-stop for two years ... Reef themselves are very helpful for advice ... I got mine from Charterhouse Aquatics ...

I initially set it up and let it 'run' for two weeks before putting in any fish ... then we put in 3 Neon Tetra's and 3 Glowlight Tetra's ... all were happy

Hope this is some help ...

  • Don't get sucked into buying new cartridges each month, have a look over at a forum I frequent http://www.thornb2b.co.uk/Biorbforum/phpBB2/ who recommend changing the sponge in there less frequently.

    Have fun.

I can vouch for not buying the service kits every month I bought a pack of 12 sponge replacements, you save loads :j the shipping was really quick and the blue colour looks so much better than the original service kit sponges;) I got mine here:
