Caveat Plusnet Fibre Optic

Beware of Plusnet Fibre Optic. This has been a disastrous move as the Wifi output from the modem provided has been incredibly weak and unusable. With a fixed cable the speed is good but the wireless signal is dramatically weakened. Now I am locked into an un-usable system that will cost me £ 137 to get out of. If you use wireless a lot at home you may well get a crappier product costing more by switching to Fibre Optic

  • Or you could buy a wireless access point and plug it in to your router, turning off the internal wireless.

    Whose router do they provide?
Have you tried another channel, or repositioning the unit.
You could do a scan with inSSIDer to look for conflicting channels.

Plusnet supply Technicolor 582N wireless router - there have been complaints by some on Plusnet forums of very weak wireless performance - but its variable - suggest you post on Plusnet forums asking for help from Customer care - they may send you a new router to try out as an alternative.
OR as OM says, buy an alternative router such as a Billion

The 582n is not a fibre router - it is an ADSL (2+) modem/router/wifi-AP. So they must supply a different one for fibre connections.

I have a TG582n with my BE connection - wifi works fine, no better or worse than a TG587Nv2 or a ST585v6 or a DG834Gv4 I have used in the past. (I get 65meg sync speed to the TG582n; I used to get 54meg to the ST585v6 and DG835Gv4 and TG587Nv2 as I only had wifi-G in my then PC ... I now have single channel wifi-N in my laptop).

As suggested above, have you tried changing the channel?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

And also play with the location/position of the device. I find this does make a difference with my own TG582n vis-a-vis signal strength.

Living up to your signature , ;) It is a fibre router , sort of , it has modified firmware that allows one of the ethernet ports to be used for the fibre input connection.

OP , would a set of Homeplugs be any use to you ? - http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/default_ShopGroup.asp?ShopGroupID=61

Thanks wayne 3765 for confirming what I said -IT IS the router currently supplied by Plusnet ,to be attached to the BT fibre modem. And a quick view of the Plunet user's forum will support what I said about flakey wireless with SOME of the supplied 582n s!!:)

Every day is a school day! :)

So ... I was correct; it IS an ADSL (2+) modem.
BUT ... Plusnet supply it with modified firmware to enable one of the LAN ports to be used as an input connection ... which I presume comes from the Fibre Modem connected to the phone line? ;) So essentially they are bypassing the built-in modem.

Sky do this too with their new hub. So you lose an ethernet port as well. I guess someone will come out with a combined VDSL modem/router before long.
