Boiler setting

We have an oil boiler. There are heat settings on there (in the form of bars), there's a 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5. At the moment it's set to 2. When the hearings on its set to about 21. Should I increase the setting on the boiler or will this use more oil?

Many thanks

What's the maximum? Can you still hear it?

You need to understand how settings work.

    1) the boiler. Heats the water passing through it to a set temperature.

    2) the main house thermostat. Turns the boiler on when the house temp drops below the set level, and off when the house temp rises to the set level.

    3) the hot water cylinder thermostat. Turns the boiler on when the water teperature drops below the set level, and off when water temp rises to the set level.

If 1) above is too low (ie as an extreme example the water coming out of the boiler is just warm), the radiators will get warm, not hot, so the house temperature will not rise (much) so 2) above will keep the boiler ON constantly trying to heat the house. This uses more oil.

Same applies with 3) above as the water for baths will only get warm so the boiler will stay on.

At the other extreme, if 1) above is too high, the water coming from the boiler will be boiling hot. To achieve this the boiler has to work hard, thus using lots of oil.

So the ideal is somewhere in between. Boiler high enough/hot enough to heat radiators & water sufficiently, without wasting energy by being too high.

    Experiment.
