postage charge increased after I paid on ebay

Hi, I bought an item on ebay earlier today and paid for it within a few hours ( i was out at the time the auction ended) I then received an email this evening from the seller saying that they had underestimated the cost of the postage and wanted me to pay the extra or they would cancel the transaction. Can they get away with doing this?

The seller should not be asking you for more money and you have no need to pay any more.
Personally I would email back politely and say you have paid your winning Bid and that is all you are prepared to pay for the item and that as per ebays terms you expect the item to be delivered within the stated time frame.
If they' refund your money and/ or refuse to sell leave appropriate feedback. Something like 'seller refused to sell unless I paid extra' .I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. thanks Soolin that's what I thought, they got quite aggressive about it saying that they would be forced to cancel the transaction if it could not be resolved as they refused to be out of pocket.Make £5 a day challenge - April

You can't force them to sell but it is a foolish seller that provokes a buyer in this way. Don't forget as well as the neg feedback that you can (And probably should) refuse any mutual cancellation request that the seller sends.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I did email them and say that I thought it was unfair. I myself sold something last week and underestimated the postage, it ended up costing twice as much to send as I charged but I just posted it anyway and noted it as a lesson learned.Make £5 a day challenge - April

I had paid the extra postage as I really wanted the item, it is quite hard to find and it was quite cheap (I think the seller was more annoyed because I had placed the only bid). I will leave feedback stating what happened though.Make £5 a day challenge - April

The seller apparently thinks they are being fair and reasonable because they are only charging what it costs to send and not overcharging.Make £5 a day challenge - April

By paying extra you are encouraging them to believe what they are doing is OK.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I see what you are saying Soolin, thank you. Nice to know I am not the only one who thinks the seller is being unreasonable.Make £5 a day challenge - April

Would it be better to leave neutral or negative feedback do you think? Or am I just being picky?Make £5 a day challenge - April

Neg all the way. Something along the lines of 'Seller asked me for extra postage or they would cancel transaction'.
Keep it succinct and dispassionate - don't use silly words like 'beware' or loads of !!!s. Although I certainly would not have paid up, that will still dissuade them from thinking it's a good idea to try and bully buyers into paying more."Well, it's election year, Bill, we'd rather people didn't exercise common sense..." - Jed Bartlet, The West Wing, season 4
