Why do sellers hold me to feedback ransom?

I've been an ebay buyer since 2003 and have 100% feedback (103). I'm usually at my computer when an auction ends, just in case I need to up my bid, and if I win I pay, via Paypal, within 2 minutes of the auction ending.
Now forgive me if I'm wrong, but I consider that to be a perfect transaction on my part and I have done everything that is expected of me and in that case I deserve to have positive feedback.
So why do some sellers send invoices or notes inside the parcel saying something along the lines of 'please leave feedback and I will do the same'?

I can only think that sellers won't leave feedback first just in case there is a problem once I receive it but I'm more inclined to 'forget' to give feedback than be held to ransom, or am I wrong on this?

as a seller i always leave feedback as soon as payment received.

If the purchase has been paid for in a reasonable time then i see no reason not too.

If after purchase there is an issue that is the time to deal with that.

As a buyer i do forget to leave feedback if I am asked for it.

Ebay/Paypal can hold some Sellers funds upto 21 days.
Giving feedback can release the funds much quicker.

Thanks for that. I can't say that I've ever had a problem with anything I've bought. I buy mainly clothes and sometimes they don't quite fit but the seller never knows that because I never tell them but that is the problem of 'not standardising women's sizes' not the seller. Just as if I went shopping in the high street some shops I'll fit into a size and some shops I will.
I always give feedback if I don't get the request.

I wasn't aware of this... do you mean feedback from me or from the seller? Doesn't the seller get the money as soon as I pay for an item? The seller does see that I have paid for it doesn't he/she?

  • I usually say that I will leave feedback once feedback has been received for the item I have sold. I usually ask people to leave feedback so I know it has arrived. I didn't think I was holding the buyer to ransom over it (ooops).

Thanks for that info... it certainly explains why the sellers put in the little notes but I'd rather have the positive feedback for me doing what I am supposed to do within 2 minutes of the auction ending.

Buy from me then - I always leave feedback as soon as I have received cleared payment - I actually state this in my listings, too.

Shall I PM my user id?

    ;)

I used to wait until I had received the buyer's feedback but, as it was pointed out somewhere on this forum all a buyer is obliged to do is pay, and once that's been done then feedback should be left. I changed my ways after reading that!

I do believe it's possible to report users to ebay for feedback extortion - and I would assume saying feedback will be left after feedback has been given is just that - because the implication is that they want to see GOOD feedback before they will leave any, given that buyers are able to leave negative feedback which sellers aren't.

I'm not a seller so I don't see things on your side of the fence. I realise that problems do occur and I suppose sellers want to get their money as soon as they can.

I will think again about 'forgetting' to give feedback but I would be quicker to give my feedback to a seller who has given me my feedback recognising I have fulfilled my side of the bargain.

  • oh, I don't do it just to see good feedback - although of course that is always welcome. After looking on this board, I think I need to review a few of my 'terms and conditions', I'm afraid I am another who states that I will be held responsbible for the item once handed over to royal mail. Hmmmm, thanks everyone although I guess you can never please all buyers all the time.
