No insurance!

Had a collision the other day, someone went into the side of my car. We exchanged details. I have since found out that they weren't insured, certainly not with the company they told me.
Rang the police who weren't interested at all which I don't understand, I thought it was illegal to drive on a public road without valid motor insurance????

Have since contacted the motor insurance bureau to begin a claim.
Anybody got any more advice? The motor insurance bureau told me to report the accident to a police station and get a crime number. I have got the reg plate of the car, surely something more can be done, it is unbelievable! thanks

Go down to the police station and make a formal statement and a complaint if needed.

goto askmid.com first. You can get their insurance details from there for a small fee.

They maybe insured or the car was but the driver wasn't.

• It's not a recordable crime to drive without insurance so what you need is a collision/log number.

If no one was injured he does not have to give insurance details.

Run the reg number through askmid then report back.

I ran it through askmid and this is what I got back, I've removed my details though.

This could mean that the third party was uninsured at the time of the incident.

Next steps to consider
* Contact your insurer, or that of the injured party
* Seek legal advice on how to proceed, if applicable
* Go to the <a href="http://www.mib.org.uk/" target="_blank">MIB website to determine if you can submit a claim to the MIB
* See if you or your client could take advantage of MIB's free legal expense scheme <a href="http://www.firstassistinsurance.co.uk/mibles/index.htm" target="_blank">MIBLES.

Credit Hire and Terms and Conditions for those acting on behalf of a client

Please be aware that if your client’s vehicle has been damaged as a result of an accident with an uninsured motorist and the use of an alternative vehicle is necessary then a completed claim form should be submitted immediately to enable appropriate enquiries to be put in hand by MIB. In the event of increased cost of hire being incurred as a result of delayed submission of the claim form it will be argued that these will be the responsibility of your client and constitute a failure to mitigate the loss. Please see <a href="http://www.mib.org.uk/Customer+Services/en/Making+a+claim/Claims+Explained/Credit+Hire.htm" target="_blank">MIB website for further details.

Went to the police station and they basically said the same, it isn't a recordable crime and only my insurance can report the matter to the police. My insurance have said because they haven't got insurance I am on my own.

So the situation is that someone has broke the law, smashed into my car and have now caused me loss. The police aren't interested and aren't going to get involved because no-one was injured and they didn't drive away from the scene, so it is left to the motor insurance bureau to try and recover my loss and it is likely that the other party is just going to ignore them.

It goes to show lawlessness can pay and there may be some truth to the theory that the laws of the land are used primarily to generate revenue and not to actually protect the citizens. :(

My advice to anyone who is driving without insurance is to just make sure you exchange details after an accident and give any old insurance company and you will get away scott free.
• Let's hope he gets caught on an ANPR camera soon, and has his car seized. Do you have his reg. no yet?

Just look at it from the police point of view. They will have to put their pies down, get off their big fat !!!!!! and do some detective work without 100% chance of a successful prosecution. Far too difficult.
• Looks like the police only act on insured cars if they catch them actually being used on public roads. I wonder if the car has been declared SORN or not - if not, then hopefully the DVLA will be sending him a bill for not insuring it. If it is SORN'd, then the DVLA like to hear about SORN'd cars being used on the public roads - they like to clamp them and tow them away.....revenge is a dish best served cold.

I have the reg, theystopped and exchanged details, they just weren't insured and it seems it is just hard luck for me.
I cannot believe it cannot be acted upon, the police could easily go to the address and see the damage on their car, corroborate my story with whatever they say and take action.
It seems because there is no injured party they don't bother, just someone with a loss. I bet if the state was losing something they would be straight round to them.
We pay taxes for this as well?

Does anyone know what my chances are with the motor insurance bureau? How much power have they got, what action can they take etc..?

cheers
• If you're fully comp, claim on your own insurance and pay your excess. They will seek damages from the third party, end of story.

Right?

I got hit by an uninsured euro type who sailed off into the moonlight. They did catch up with him!
