            iphones are rubbish. I have one, (iphone 4) and hate it. Restrictive. The only good thing is the robust construction of it.
 I am the same, I have never taken out insurance, although I have it as part of my banking account0

            I'd get pay as you go so they can't run you up a big bill and just buy handset outright (insure it if high risk of them breaking, losing it or it getting stolen)
 o2 have lots of pay go deals where if you top up X/month you get lots of free things so you could direct debit some kind of monthly top up and when its gone its gone.
 Tesco do a capped contract which works in a similar way and you even get a handset so maybebest of both worlds?
