Ask her to ask Telstra to unlock it.

Jailbreaking doens't unlock it, but is a starting point to do so, but the way Apple lock phones is done on Apples database, not in the phone as most others phones do. Any upgrade could potentially re-lock them if done by any other way.
  • if you can't get Telstra then you may be able to unlock it yourself.

If you mean the iPhone 3G then this can be jailbroken using a tool such as redsn0w and then you can use ultrasn0w to unlock the phone.

Both applications can be downloaded from blog.iphone-dev.org and there are plenty of tutorials you can follow with step by step instructions on iclarified.com

True BUT there is still the risk that a future upgrade will re-lock the phone Apples database would say it is locked to Telstra in AU, so a future sync may re-lock it.

To avoid anything like this ring Telstra and see if once out of contract they are able to unlock the phone from their network.

Saving for a year in Japan.
I need around £10,000. Help me get there!
  • Thanks one and all, I managed to get Telstra to unlock it for no charge. I have also managed to get it all set up and running on my existing sim obviously, but it does not pick up the network to well saying no service, move to another Part of the house and it works. So far not that impressed with it and may revert back to my Blackberry
