Labour have a bit of cheek to try and score political points over this, as the current fuel duty escalator was introduced by them.

Unfortunately, a rise in fuel duty impacts on everything, from getting to work, to how much bus prices go up and how much your food costs

Let alone higher basic fuel prices bring in more tax/VAT anyway. ;)

Pure political scumbagging from Labour. Throughout this Government they will pick out any given item & say it should be lowered, not cut, not raised etc. All the while they will 100% refuse to publish the detail of how they would balance the budget. The sole purpose of it is to force the coalition to either refuse to delay the increase (which will be unpopular) or to delay it (in which case Labour will say it was only delayed because of their intervention).

So basically scumbag politics from a party that specialises in them. But it will probably fool a few people.

Why don't they close tax avoidance loopholes, increase tax on fags, tax magazines & newspapers (as mentioned by scotsman), more tax on fast food? There are lots of fairer ways tax could be raised in a more proportionate way.

This nonsense with fuel taxation has to stop. Its pushing up food prices, air travel, taxi fares, clothes, postage & delivery costs and many other things.

The fact that any increase in duty is even being considered is madness. The arrogance of these people astounds me.

If going back to the 19th century practice to tax knowledge, why not stop there? People have been looking out of their windows free of charge for far too long (just 4 year longer than newspapers were no longer stamped). Or to be logical, if paper is taxed, so should internet downloads ...
