Hi,
We noticed today out springer is struggling to wee, been squatting loads but not going much.
Anyway she did a little wee about an hour ago and I've just followed her outside again and she squatted for a few seconds, I followed with a torch(as you do) and she hasn't weed that I can see (it has been raining but there was no puddle) but I think there is a tiny bit of blood, I'm talking an 1/8 of a tea spoon size, the tinest amount you can imagine.
I've looked on google and guessing its probably cystitis and we will take her to the vets tomorrow but is there anything we can give her at home which can help her??
Thanks x

she needs water - encourage her to drink! I wouldnt advocate any home remedies it may not be cystitis and you could make matters worse.

It probably is hun - but my springer had a bad kidney infection which caused similar symptoms.

Thanks for the info, she is absolutely fine in her self, polished off her dinner in record time and getting annoyed at the other springer we have which is normal behaviour for her :rotfl: it's just hubby noticed she kept squatting on her walk and she only normally wees at home!

Wasn't sure weather to give her cranberry juice and a hot bath or something lol x

Not sure about the cranberry juice! springers have wierd tastes and she may decide its her preferred drink! a hot bath - hmmmmm depends on whether she loves or hates baths! lol - not joking, my springer loved to bath! wasnt keen on rivers and ponds etc (thier natural habitat - it took us years to teach her to swim! before that the silly mare just walked along the bottom of the pond with water over her head until someone jumped in and fished her out!).

straining to wee and urine is typical of cystitis or bladder crystals.. Please get your dog to the vet. This will need antibiotics to clear it up, I expect there will be a lot of pain and discomfort so try and get an early appointment if you an.

I've had a cat with cystitis and a dog with bladder crystals and these are typical symptoms.

Our GSD used to get cystitis quite often as she got older resulting in doses of antibiotics :( The vet told us that to get her to drink more (flush out the infection) add a little milk to her water (she loved milk!) or a little stock (who knew she also liked chicken flavoured water?!). The downside - little (actually, quite big) accidents. Gotta love a tiled floor :) One time, they wanted a sample - I had an evening of following her around the garden with an old take away tray, trying to get it under her back end as she stooped - and every time I tried she'd jump back up again like I'd just goosed her :rotfl: I never got the sample, but the next day at the vets when the vet asked if we'd got the sample she delivered one on cue - poor lamb just couldn't hold it :)

As someone who's suffered cystitis a few times personally, I ditto the vet trip, and sooner rather than later. There are home remedies I would try myself but with a dog I wouldn't risk it without vet advice. Cranberry juice is often quite high in sugar and feeds the bacteria so, although it's supposed to reduce the chances of getting cystitis, I don't think it's recommended once you have an infection.
One remedy that does work well (for me) is bicarbonate of soda (taken orally), but I would want to check with a vet if it was safe to give a dog. Googling seems to be a huge range of results, from it being highly toxic, to it being given to dogs with urinary problems, so I wouldn't risk it. You could always ask your vet if they know whether it's safe, so you know for the future incase she gets another bout of it (I know in humans at least, the more you get it, the more prone you can be to it)

Deffo a trip to the vets.
  • Thank you for the replies so far,

Well this morning, she went out first thing and did a massive wee at 5.30am with no blood , hubby took her out for her walk and she did a little wee and has been absolutely fine... No more squatting all day or anything..

Spoke to the receptionist at the vets who was happy as she seems fine to leve her till tomorrow to see the vet if she's starts struggling

Do you think she still needs to go?? She is fine, eating, drinking and weeing normally and not feeling sorry for herself or anything. I don't want to waste money on a vet if he was just having an off day but equally don't want to have her suffering when she doesn't need to be.....

It may be, if it was cystitis that it's cleared itself. Is she asking to go out more frequently? If so, I'd say she's still got it.
Is she spayed - if not, is she due in season? If she's due in season, that may explain lots of tiny wees - scenting!?
