I have worn varifocals for years, never had a problem with them either, can def see the pavement!!
If you along that route ask your optician if they will change them if you really cant get on with them, I know spec save will and also my partners optician did and they were an independent shop.
Do not go for the cheapest lens, I usually go for the middle of the range and I look for deals in the various stores and get them when there is an offer onTreat other's how you like to be treated.

I use daily disposables (daysoft) for short sightedness and a pair of ready readers over the top as and when required.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Another very happy varifocal wearer.
I used to have half glasses so I could read and see to the back of the classroom. When my distance vision started to go, I went to varifocals with no problem.Member #14 of SKI-ers club
Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -
I'm 52 and have had my varifocals for 4 years and I took to them straight away. I have my everyday ones and my sunglasses in the same prescription.
I never considered having separate distance and reading glasses, I couldn't be doing with a load of faffing around changing glasses all the time.
Also, I'd never even consider bifocals - they are so aging.
With varifocals, it's just a matter of learning to look through the correct part of the lens for whatever activity you are doing.
PS I still see the pavement just as well as I always did !Early retired - 18th December 2014

I had to get varifocals a few months ago - I'm 45. I was told it would be easier to get used to them as I was younger, which made me feel a lot better about them (I'd known for over a year I needed varifocals but I went into total denial about it until my old glasses actually fell apart).
I really like them now. I had no problems getting used to them but I did go for the Zeiss lenses, which were expensive but have practically no distortion in them. The only problem now is when playing the piano I can no longer blame my mistakes on not being able to see the music...0 -
Excellent advice. The thing with varifocals is that in todays more fashionable, smaller frames, there is less room for error in lens/frame/eyes alignment.Just to add to my learned collegaues excellent advice - fitting is critical. Best get them measured and fitted face to face with a qualified Dispensing Optician who understands what they are doing.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). I have astigmatism and also really bad travel sickness but I've had no bother with varifocals. i took to them really quickly. I'd also recommend Asda Opticians. They told me umpteen times I could bring them back if I didn't get along with them.0

I have three prescriptions: one for distance, one for computer and one for reading. Whenever I have an eye test they always try to talk me into have varifocals, but I really don't want to.
I only wear my distance glasses for driving and only wear my reading glasses for reading in bed at night. It is the computer ones that I have on all day at work and just could not envisage getting used to three different prescriptions in one lense:eek: I would be all over the place.Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time :eek:0 -
right: on with the varifocals after many years of "normal" glasses (but a struggle to read!).
Finding them very weird: I paid (nasally!) for the "top of range" ones....but having read things like "there is a small amount of soft focus at the edges" for the distance, I find myself questioning whether the right lenses were installed: feels like I have to be looking fairly directly at things for them to be in focus (& even then.....).
I remember my varifocals feeling like that for about 2 weeks when I first wore them. Sure, there is a "corridor" of corrected vision, but once I got used to them, I didn't notice it or feel like I had to look squarely at something to see it properly.
I think I also got used to moving my head a bit more often, for instance to look down at steps.
I went straight to varifocals from single vision glasses as I felt i was far too young for bifocals (early 30's) and I really couldn't be bothered with changing glasses all the time!0 -
I am 55, and have been wearing glasses full time since the age of 4. I tried bi focals, ok but had to have two pairs of glasses because of computer work. Last year I tried vari focals and have never looked back, if you'll excuse the pun! They are not so obviously "aging" as bi focals. I too go to Asda, great service and good range of frames.Growing old disgracefully!0
