I have driving glasses but need to get stronger glasses for reading, as the moment wear my reading glasses most of the time, except when driving, but I'm getting to the point were can't read small print. Have got a stronger pair but then can't see across the room in them and certainly couldn't walk about in them. Not sure about varifocals as get bad travel sickness and have heard that they could give the same effect, so wondered about bifocals.
I think they're meant to be easier to get used to, although don't quote me on that. I didn't fancy them because I associate the look of them with old people and I didn't think I was old enough! All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I started wearing varifocals about ten years ago and took to them very quickly.
For day to day use, office work etc they are ideal. I also like the fact they have a mid range so I'm able to sit well back from my computer screen.
I do also have a super cheap pair of pure reading glasses made to my prescription online for less than £10! My hobby involves some very intricate work so I keep these on my workbench for odd occasions.0 -
I was happy to try them, as they were suggested by my optician. But even after 2 weeks I was still suffering horrible pains in the front of my face.
When I took them back, a different optician said I should never have been prescribed them in the first place (I think it was something to do with astigmatism, but I'm not sure) I'd love to be able to wear them, but get by wearing a second pair on top of my head. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
Bifocals----No they make you look old. Cheap Varifocals are hopeless you need the more expensiv/thinner ones, they dont come cheap.0

i have a astigmatism, but really feel they are pushing them, going back tomorrow, although you get a month trial,i really don't like the idea of old age glasses.:cool:Before you point fingers, make sure your hands are clean !;)0 -
If you decide to go for distance glasses and readers, go to Tesco, where you can get prescription glasses for £15. They do some average looking metal frames which look fine. My friend has varifocals which she has to wear for work because of changing focal length all the time, but for driving she wears her Tesco distance glasses, and reading she just wears the Tesco reading glasses. The rest of the time she just goes without! Depends on how high your prescription is of course.
I bought a pair of Tesco distance glasses for driving and I do have to say they are wonderful, especially at night. To be able to see through the whole area of the lens and not have to hold your head in a certain position makes such a difference. I would recommend them to anyone, especially more mature people who struggle with night time driving and tend to lose confidence. My glass is half full :beer:0 -
I got my first varifocals about 18 months ago - I got 'normal' ones and prescription sunglasses for £300 total. The sunglasses were fab from day 1 (after the initial getting-used-to-it phase), but I didn't like the normal ones - I'd chosen glasses with small lenses, and the field of vision at the reading level was very small. I went back within the 3 months they'd allowed me for getting used to them, and they changed them for a different style at no extra cost (and I was able to keep the first pair, handy as a back up). I need glasses for reading, but also for that 'middle distance' - things like the SatNav, and focusing on faces during conversation - and although my distance vision is OK, it's better with the glasses too!
I don't think they look old - mine have red frames, designed by Levi's. I think peering over the top of your glasses makes you look older! No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
I have astigmatism - didn't stop me wearing varifocals! I've also used Specsavers' "elite" lenses - but my cheap ASDA ones I've been wearing for the last year and a bit compare very favourably. They don't have to be uber-expensive. Trouble is, there aren't many ASDA opticians around...0
