Hi

I think I have a Mywebsearch virus and noticed another thread already about the same subject. However, I didnt want to be rude and hijack some one elses thread to ask for help. I also didnt want the thread to start getting too confusing with two different cases.

I have just ran my scans and Avast comes back clean. malwarebytes first scan had 122 threats all regarding Mywebsearch, I've removed all threats and ran the scan again but it still came back with 17 more threats all on mywebsearch.

I've tried searching online and some websites states that this is nothing to worry about and other sites states that this is highly dangerous and should be removed immediately.

I found nothing in my programs files/features to uninstall.

Please help.

Ensure that they are all selected for removal (ticks in the checkboxes). Malwarebytes detects some as PUP's - these aren't checked by default for removal.

    Don't worry.

Some sites far exaggerate the supposed threat as they have their own brand of crapware to push, or (paid) removal service - or they are affiliates of some software brands and get paid if you install the software they are pushing.

MyWebSearch is a minor irritant (PUP = Potentially Unwanted Program). It was once pre-installed on some OEM machines from the factory (Dell, HP, etc)

ok, so I have done the malwarebytes twice now and I made sure that the second time, I had all the boxes ticked. Do I carry on doing the scans until it eventually comes back clean?

Are you prompted to reboot? Post the logfile.

Run a quick scan again. When the logfile opens, post the contents.

    Folders Detected: 17
    C:\Users\brandon\AppData\LocalLow\MyWebSearch (PUP.MyWebsearch) -> No action taken.

You have to ensure the checkboxes are ticked before clicking remove selected..
  • Each time I tick the boxes to remove, It freezes and states that malwarebytes is not responding at the top. I have to close the program, go back into the program and delete the threats from the quarantine tab. As this is the third scan, I am guessing that it is not deleting?

    Run chkdsk

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-vista/Check-your-hard-disk-for-errors

Check both options: Automatically fix file system errors & Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.

It may take a while so do it overnight.

Then run MBAM again but first:
    • When the MBAM loads select the Settings tab, then the Scanner Settings tab
    • For Action for Potentially Unwanted Programs (PUP), choose Show in results list and check for removal
    • Select to the Scanner tab, select Perform Quick scan, then click on Scan
  • I have done the above and changed the settings on MBAM.

The threats are displayed with the boxes already ticked but I am still having problems deleting them. As soon as I press the delete buttom, the program freezes and displays the message that MBAM is not responding at the top. I come out of the program and when I go in again, the threats are in my quarantine tab which lets me delete the threats from there and clears my quarantine page, however, the threats appear again each time I rescan.

    Any help?

Boot to safe mode by restarting & continually pressing F8 at startup. Then when you reach the Advanced boot options menu, choose safe mode.

Run a quick scan with MBAM and see if that helps.
