Any thoughts on Nokia Lumia 820

I have had my iPhone 3gs for quite a few years now, it was a major upgrade from my LG Viewty. Since then, no phones have really interested me, all the iPhones since have been more the same for a ridiculous price, there is no way I will pay that price again for a tarted up version of the phone I already have. Yes, the apps are great, but the iOS feels old and looks old now. I looked at android phones but nothing really stood out, apart from the Galaxy S3. However, this felt cheaper than it looked and the screen I felt was a little too big (although I would eventually probably have got used to it).

Along comes the new Windows Phone 8 Lumia 820 and it looks refreshing. The OS looks fresh and clean, and the screen response is great. TBH, this is the first phone that has really made me think about upgrading. If any member has one, what are your thoughts of the phone and OS?

I am not a person that must buy the latest top of the range phone to try to impress, nor am I loyal to one brand, I go for the product that suits my needs.

The Nokia 820 is a nice phone as well as easy to use.
Don't forget you also get the Nokia SatNav for free. Unlike some others you do not need the Internet so you can use the SatNav anywhere in the world. The SatNav is similar to TomTom.

I am waiting for Nokia 920.

I love mine, very easy to use, quick to load apps etc. Has a good camera.
A few of us in our family have it, after trying out my brothers.

My brother swapped from an iPhone to one and loves it.
  • I recently upgraded to a Lumia 820 from iPhone 4, and having used it extensively for a few days, I'm still not sure about keeping it.

It's a really nice phone, and beats the iPhone in a lot of ways - great camera, OS is fantastic, etc...

The big letdown for me is the lack of app support... A quick example - last night I wanted to watch the Man Utd game on Sky, but as the kids were going to bed they wanted to watch a little TV. Normally I would let them watch Peppa Pig, etc... for a while & keep track of the football on my iPhone using Sky Go.

Sky Go isn't available on Windows Mobile. Nor is BBC iPlayer. These are two apps I use a lot on my iPhone - but the worrying thing (for me at least) is that Sky and the BBC have both said they don't intend to develop apps for Windows mobile as the market share is so small.

My concern is that if I stick with the Nokia, I will see more and more apps being developed for iOS and Android but unsupported in Windows, as the market share doesn't look as though it will increase much (particularly with the disastrous launch of the Nokia 920).

If you're not too bothered about apps though, then the Lumia is a great (and crucially cheaper) alternative to iOS & Android phones - it outperforms them in many areas.

Thats the dilemma. There are not enough apps being developed because the market share is so small at present, but people will not buy into the platform because of the small number of apps, its a vicious circle.

It needs Microsoft to give the developers money to make the apps available to start with, then the customer support will grow. Someone needs to make the first move.

....................or to make more tie-ins with Windows PCs as they are still the major players on the desktop. No ideas how or what, but if I wanted to break into a market already dominated by 2 major players (Apple and Google Android) then I would need a killer application that made my mobile the only logical choice for PC users.

There you are guys - chance to be Billionaires. Think of the magic app, develop it and let Microsoft buy you out!!!!!!!!!!!

MS are already throwing money at app developers - they've supported most of the big players.

It's a real shame about the lack of support, because the Lumia is such a nice phone to use - the tiled interface looks and feels fantastic. I have the Lumia 820 and my old iPhone phone next to me right now and the Lumia is hands down a nicer phone in both hardware and interface.

I went into the local Phones4u shop, they had a dummy Lumia 920, a dummy Lumia 820 and a few dummy HTC. There were 2 working Galaxy S3 and 2 working iPhones. I asked the assistant if they had a live demo of the Windows Phone 8 and he said told me not to bother with it as to him it was missing something and only half done, stick with Android or IOS.

If everyone is doing this, then the Lumia is dead in the water. I would still like to get a hands on feel with the phone so will tray a larger store with a more competent person.

The screen is low-res relative to other current models - for the same money you could get the HTC 8X.
