Water use issue

Options
We have just received a letter from our water suppliers, informing us that next week "essential works" are being carried out on our water mains and we may have discoloured water for a while (perfectly safe to drink but may stain washing, if concerned - run cold tap for 30 minutes until water runs clear"

This concerns me on 2 levels
What would cause discolouration (enough to stain washing) but be safe to ingest ?
Mud from the excavations, or something else ?

and since we are on a meter - what about compensation for running a tap for 30mins ?

Any comments ?

If they say it is safe to drink but you choose to run tap for 30min why would they compensate you?
As to what the colourant is no idea but it must be something harmless to humans but may stain washing (iron oxide?).

It is sediment that collects in water pipes. When work is done it all gets disturbed and ends up back in the flow again.

because - when you are on a meter - you have to pay every time that you turn on a tap !!!

    yip.

6-inch-ductile-iron-pipe-freeze2.jpg. when a main is shut off this get blasted inthe system when the mains is swtiched back on.
but most of it gets flushed by the water co at the nearest hydrant to the works being carried out, but sometimes the yellowing can last upto few hours later, find to drink, wont cause you harm.
