    It might say it all to you, but we've never had any electric work previously and since the point of "chased" was that the wires would be hidden in the wall I assumed that "chased" meant they'd be hidden in the walls (rather than fully on display within the walls)!

    That is the problem, you assumed instead of researching or checking what chasing means. Don't mean to be harsh, doing up your first home is a learning curve and we all make mistakes. I was only 22 but looked younger when I did my first, I learned quickly to read up or be taken for a ride.

    There were a couple of jobs where what was clearly specified wasn't done: for example the stripping back of blown lathe and plaster to the lathes, chicken wire and replaster was 'finished' in a day. If you knew nothing about plastering you'd fall for it, we made them strip it and do it properly. :T

    Highly recommend Googling or a decent DIY manual before you even get to quotes.
