Hi

This stuff drives me crazy and while weeding today noticed it has started to poke through again. I know if you snap it each bit can grow into another weed so I really do try to pip all the bits up.

Has anyone got a wonder cure, please - I hate this stuff.

  • You'll need to kill the roots too. Grow it up a pole for a bit, then spray it with a systemic weedkiller.

Unless you want to dig every bit of root out by hand. ;)

Roundup might be a good choice.
  • what about those weed killing heat guns? does anyone think they would work on bindweed? noticed some going on special offer at lidl, starting tomorrow, i think they were 12.99 and refills of butane(?) 2.99 a go. i would prefer this to chemicals-has anyone tried it?
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most..... ;)

I had bindweed in a garden and was told there are 3 ways to kill it:

    1. Dig up every last bit of root. It goes down a very long way though.

    2. Kill everything above the surface with roundup and then put down some of that fabric that stops plants growing through. This takes about a year.

    3. Pick every bit that appears above the surface. Eventually that kills the plant. This takes about 10 years.

Good luck. It's a bloody nightmare.

They work great on annual weeds, like chickweed, but for perennials like dandelion, bindweed, ground elder, etc, they're a waste of time. They only kill off the top growth, but that can grow right back from the roots, which the heat gun doesn't touch.

I have the god d@mn awful stuff in my garden,
    what I have done,
dug the effected site, getting out as much as I can,
placed weed surpression fabric on effected area covered it with gravel and put pots on the top with my plants in.
thats one way, it just grows and grows,

The best method I have found is to put a little glyphosate in a sandwich bag and gather up as many shoots within reach that will fit in the bag, put them in the bag and tie loosely with a wire tie. Saves having to repeat spraying and if you are careful avoids harming other plants. Within a few weeks all the roots will be dead. Works well for brambles as well.

Another method that works and is the most environmentally friendly is "never let it see sunday". You hoe or pull the above ground plant every time you see it, after a period of time the roots run out of energy and die. This doesn't work in our garden though because we are too lazy :-)

I like Speedy Joe's idea and will give it a try.

There was also a suggestion in the Garden section of the Sunday Telegraph:
Allow it to put on more growth. To prevent damage to other plants, bundle the snaking tendrils into sawn off 2 litre plastic bottles. Then dowse the beggars with weedkiller, in the confines of the bottles. Leave the bottles on the plot until the things die, die, die! (Sorry, I'm getting a bit carried away here!)

our garden is basically a shaded area with plastic over covered in gravel. Its my desire to turn it into something lovely.

Took up all the plastic yesterday and saw LOADS of bindweed. It lookks a bit freaky as well.

    Not happy with it :(

the only way to get rid of bindweed is to move house!!!
i have been trying to get rid of it for 4 years to no avail. i live opposite a grass verge and it grows all over that and under the footpath into my garden. i don't think i will ever clear it!
