Apple shares - Invest or not invest?

Hello all,

I was wondering what people think about investing in Apple shares. The shares have plummeted down over the last couple of weeks. Have the shares oversold and its now a good buying opportunity?

Can you buy a sensible tranche (say £2K worth) of Apple shares using perhaps 5% or so of your total investments? If so you may consider it worth doing. In my view having more than 5% of your wealth in any one share is too risky to consider. As investors we have enough risk from the volatile behaviour of the overall markets, to add the risks of significant loss from an individual company running into trouble is unnecessary.

If you are a small investor with under say £20K in investments I believe you would be better advised to look at a technology fund where you are linked to those areas where Apple is active without being dependent on that one company.

Despite the hIgh price I understand that Apple are on a relatively low p/e. CNBC were saying today that the current price is a buying opportunity although the price could go lower in the short term.

Thanks for the replies. I wish to invest 2-3K in shares. I already have 5K invested in my fund ISA with Hargreaves Lansdown.

What would be cheapest site for me to use as a one off share dealing in Apple given that I'm happy to leave the shares untouched for years?

Companies such as Apple cannot innovate forever.

Also have problems with I5 supply chain. So Samsung is carving away business in the meantime.

Investing 40% of your portfolio in a single technology share is daft.

for years they had a first mover advantage with the iphone

but there are so many great and cheaper alternatives out there now they will start to lose market share imo

My feeling is that Apple has peaked. Their recent products have been incremental not revolutionary. And look at the iPad Mini - worse in every way to Google's Nexus other than the range of apps of course. And even if Apple could come up with a decent map app (which it seems they can't) you woudn't be able to use it as it has no GPS!

I don't know how long punters will be willing to keep upgrading to the latest product at premium prices unless they can come up with something genuinely new.

To me this is a company that is past its best.

However if you are still determined to invest have a look at this comparison thread. It marks the which ones allow you to buy overseas stocks.

Apple also has some impressive profit margins on its products, i.e. over 50% net. So you do wonder how much longer this is sustainable.
  • i think that with less than perhaps £30k or £40k investments, you should stick to funds and investment trusts. otherwise, you will either have too much exposure to the risks of specific companies, or excessively high costs, or both.

if you expect to invest enough new money in the next (say) 2 years to get up to £30-40k, then you might look at it as an incomplete portfolio. or might not.
