i.e. they all tend to go up together (as in the last 2 months), or all to go down together.
but in the longer term, they can still do very differently. that's where there's more benefit from diversification.
Equity does move globally when there are events of globally significance. With the uncertainty of the US election and the Euro resolved (at least for the time being) people and institutions are happier to invest. When the market isnt driven globally the advantages of particular sectors come more into play.
I dont think people should regard it as proof of their investing skills. 2 months means nothing, we just need one global "event" and the gains could easily disappear in a few days.0 -
Doshwaster that lump in India looks like an act of faith
Yeah, the 20-odd percent in India is larger that I'd like. I'm looking at diluting it to around 10% over the next few months. It's still quite a gamble but I'd happy to have one or two riskier funds in my portfolio in the hope of higher returns.
The irony at the moment is the best performing fund is a FTSE 250 tracker full of boring mid-cap companies.0 -
I opened my S&S last tax year with JPM and in my haste split my holdings equally across the following 3 funds.
JPMorgan Claverhouse Investment Trust
JPMorgan Emerging Markets Investment Trust
JPM US Equity Income A - Net Acc
My goal going forward to is to build a portfolio of long term individual stocks, looking at what people hold in their portfolios here I'm surprised more haven't opted for individual shares. Is this because they prefer the diversification and security of funds?0 -

Yes. For me I prefer to invest in funds to allow me access to different sectors and geographies in line with my investment goals. This reach and level of diversification is difficult to achieve with individual shares.

there are quite a few ppl who buy individual share on here. seem to be fewer in this thread, though.
there are lots of possible reasons to stick to funds. it's less effort. there are fewer ways to mess it up really badly. not thinking 1 is clever enough to beat market (without luck). and unless you have quite a bit to invest, funds will give you more diversification, and at lower cost.
ppl do sometimes point out that you can buy about 20 shares, in a variety of sectors, and that gives you decent diversification. correct, but (a) you need to put perhaps a minimum of £2000 in each share to keep the costs reasonable, and (b) that only covers the UK.
e.g. i hold some individual UK shares, plus some ex-UK funds.0 -

Diversification, cost and expertise are the main hindrances.
The only direct shareholdings I have are privatisations and demutualisations.IANAL etc.0 -
No complaints at the moment. My portfolio
1m 5.8%
3m 9.5%
6m 17.0%
12m 18.3%
Best performer is European Assets Trust which is up 49.9% in past year.
Bought this as was on large discount. Also European stocks were out of favour at time.0 -

5 different funds, 3 of them medium to higher risk, 1 low risk and 1 higher risk over a 10 to 15 year period via a monthly savings plan.
I have been watching the Blackrock Gold & General fund and it seems to be taking another turn downwards.
BlackRock Gold + General -4.03% in 1 month, -10.67% in 3 months, -22.23% in 1 year, +7.34% in 3 years
As many have said, its a shame it does not mirror the price of gold over a similar period0 -
I've just funded my ISA to take it to a whopping £10k, are there any rules people try to abide by with regards to how many funds that they hold?
I presume as their capital grows they look to diversify more.0
