Laptop wiped

Hi

Acquired a laptop (Thinkpad T60) with unsupported operating system. I've wiped the HDD completely and intend to install a Linux operating system.

Trouble I have is that it doesn't recognise the DVD or USB stick despite changing the BIOS startup list so that they are first. Basically just 'hangs' with a flashing cursor although cannot type anything. DVD drive isn't active at all.

If I try to restart and interrupt the setup, I can get to an Intel BIOS function that searches for a bit and gives up.

Keen to give Linux a go but wonder if anyone has any ideas as to how I can get it on there.

Many thanks.

how long have you waited, booting from CD/DVD can take quite a while,

also have you checked the disk that you have burnt it to is fine? sometimes it just hasnt burnt properly

which distrobution are you trying? the usual ones to try initially are ubuntu or linux mint due to the decent support they give

on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Thanks. Yes, it is ubuntu. Have waited 10 mins and then given up.

Disk is fine - also tried USB stick and that has same result.

have you another system you have tried booting up from the disk just to check it properly?

might be worth looking at another distrobution just to check as well, puppy linux will sometimes work where ubuntu fails

  • Thanks all. Yes, CD and USB were absolutely fine. It was happily running Windows XP before. I had to wipe the HDD as it was an ex-work laptop which was part of the deal of me having it.

Yes, just transferred the files over to the DVD in Iso format. Now wondering if they should have been unzipped or something???

An ISO image is a single file that contains an image of what should be on the disk, kind of similar to a zip file being a file that contains a lot of compressed files; it is not directly usable - with a zip file you have to extract the contents into directories and files, and with an ISO image you have to extract (or "burn") the contents to a blank disk..

So, you need a burner (eg. Nero, or Windows 7 built-in one) to transfer the ISO image onto the disc in a usable format.

BTW, this is not specific to Linux - you can also get Windows disc images in ISO format.

    IMGBurn does the job
How do I add a signature?

If you right-click an ISO in Windows 7 and choose "Open With", one of the options is "Windows Disk Image Burner".
