Have you ever been reprimanded over something so stupid?

Oh another one for you. My boss bought with his own money a large plastic box for staff to store their cereal in that they ate before starting work etc or a loaf a bread for toast. The Financial controller called him in to her office and went mental at him for 10 mins saying how dare he buy a box with his own money and bring it in to work!! Everyone could hear her and it was laughable. He came out of the office 10 minutes later with a red face and was very angry that she has reacted this way.0

For future reference as I'm sure I'll need it, how are you supposed to act when getting an earful for something daft? I argued my point but It was as much use as pi$$Ing in the wind and made matters worse, should you just play along?
If you wish to keep your job - at least until you find another one - discretion is probably the better part of valour - keep your head down, and if you are criticised just take it on the chin and don't argue back.
If the manager is being very unreasonable/vindictive, you could consider invoking the grievance procedure and making a formal complaint. Unfortunately, this will not endear you to this manager, and whatever the outcome of the grievance procedure, the chances are he will then be watching you like a hawk for any excuse to dismiss you.
The words 'rock' and 'hard place' spring to mind. Sorry.
DxI'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
I was once spoken to because I made someone feel uncomfortable because I didn't take as many notes as they did at a short training session....Debts 07/12/2021

I read it as everyone else went out for a two hour lunch break and the person went for one hour.
Thats the way I read it and understood it too.You should have stuck to your initial decision. If you can't do overtime then you can't.
+1. These days employers don't respect you if they can sway you and force you to change your mind, it just says you're a pushover and ripe for bullying and punishment.
Instead next time stick to your guns. "Sorry, if you'd asked me at lunch time I could have changed my plans but now I have an appointment I can't cancel" would be something good the next time. Don't be swayed otherwise they'll loose their respect for you (which will already be low because you said no but will be even lower if you change your mind).
Have I ever been reprimanded over something so stupid? Frequently. In my last job I got spoken to about a customer complaint about my driving. Apparently I was all over the place driving like a racing mad looney. The boss even admitted that they knew I wasn't speeding as they'd checked the GPS logs for the vehicle but I still got had a go at for it. I've frequently had a 'going at' for following orders because I shouldn't have done what I was told. I got called a ####ing w@nk£r for using the toilet once when I had an upset stomach. Got called a ####ing c**t for saying "Good morning" to the boss and was almost suspended because they wouldn't pay my mileage and I sent an email asking why (they sent me elsewhere and agreed to pay it but then wouldn't pay it and kept saying I'd get it the next month etc).
The strangest one was the time I walked out of a job where the boss had been trying to get rid of me for months. All my colleagues kept telling me he was threatened by me because I was smarter than him and he kept making my life a routine hell. I walked out. Went back a couple of days later to hand my stuff in and got a b*ll*cking because I'd left! !!!!!! was that about?
Bottom line? Thats why so many blokes look miserable at work and in their personal life. This country is full of people spreading the power hungry crap that parliament keeps dishing out. It travels from the top to the bottom.0
