Have you ever been reprimanded over something so stupid?

I had to post this just to make sure its not just me who thinks this is ridiculous.

Tuesday this week my supervisor asked me at 4.50 if I could stay on, I said no, it was very short notice considering I finish at 5pm and my Mrs would already be waiting outside to collect me. So away goes the supervisor and down comes the head of HR and rabbits on and on about how the boss wouldn't forget it and all the rest, in the end I caved, I went out and sent the Mrs home, she had made a wasted journey and diesels not cheap but anyway, did the over time etc etc.

The following day I am called into the office and told of and what for? Because I said no to the supervisor and yes to the HR guy regarding overtime, he wasn't happy at all, thats the damn thanks you get for doing overtime, didn't see my side of the story at all and frankly didn't care,

This is the 3rd time I have seen the inside of that office over silly crap and I've only been their 5 months. I have been working 15+ years and never once been told of in any job until now.

Is this ridiculous or is it just me?

You should have stuck to your initial decision. If you can't do overtime then you can't.

No they're being very unreasonable. They should just be grateful that you stayed late after all.

Its laughable really, you couldn't make it up. I think they're looking me to walk but I won't break.

I know someone who got a final written warning for not being able to cover reception (they work in accounts) when the whole office (22 people except them as they had plans to meet a friend for lunch) went out for a 2 hour lunch break. This person was only allowed a 1 hour break and ended up with a final warning with no other warnings ever on their record!

But you say you've only been there 5 months? They don't have to 'look for you to walk', they can simply sack you for no reason (not including discriminatory etc).

That person wasn't given a final warning for refusing to cover reception. That person got the final warning for taking a two hour lunch break instead of one.

Why did the supervisor send HR guy down, if not to change your mind?! Weird

I read it as everyone else went out for a two hour lunch break and the person went for one hour.

I would have explained that you significantly inconvenienced both yourself and your wife by staying that evening, but you did so because you assumed it was of great importance to the business. Why else would they have sent a second person down to beg you to work the extra time at such short notice?

...and if that's really their attitude to staff that put themselves out for the sake of the company, you won't put yourself out again for them in the foreseeable future.

What are you talking about? the people all 22 of them who went out to lunch together went for TWO HOURS the person who was meeting a friend was only allowed 1 and because they were not available to cover reception they got the warning, get it? Or a bit too hard for you to understand?
