Excelent value, just what i'm looking for.
I've used them a few times and the service has always been very good. They have always gone out of their way to help, even when I made a mistake with an order.

The bikes I have bought are not state of the art of course considering the price but very good for the money. If you look in a catalogue like Kays the bikes are similar to the cheap (£100 ish last time I looked) ones in there. Brands like Universal.

I bought a bike of them about 4 months ago for travelling to the train station for work everyday.

The blinkin' right crankshaft and pedal keep coming off no matter how much I tighten the nut. I have replaced the nut 3 times.

I phoned them and they told me I would have to remove the crank and send it back to universal. £7 for the tool to buy it plus postage!!!

Its a shame because I really like the bike and it would be great if it wasn't for this.

This isn't really related to the thread I know but if the crank keeps coming off however tight you do up the bolt, it's usually the axle that the crank attaches to that needs replacing. The square end of the axle gets rounded off and each time you put it back on play develops until it falls off again. So I'd be very hesitant about returning the crank for a replacement as I doubt very much that a new one will make a difference.

This axle is part of what's called the 'bottom bracket' (the assembly that sits inside the frame and keeps the axle running smoothly). Unless you're familiar with the finer aspects of cycle repair, replacing this yourself is a right pain, and will take at least 2 specific tools, a good cycle manual, and a fair amount of time and frustration! (Think ball-bearings and grease everywhere!) A local shop will do it of course, but with the parts and labour (the crank might also need replacing if it's also become mis-shaped) the chances are it'll amount to more than the 50-odd quid the bike's worth. If you can return the whole bike under warranty for repair/replacement I'd strongly recommend it!

A tale of two Raleighs; Among many bikes that I have owned over many years, I had two Raleigh racers in succession. The first was very nice looking, new, the sort of thing that is available at any outlet, Halfords, etc., not the cheapest by any means. It was horrid, a real bone-shaker, even your fillings would fall out. Then I was offered another second hand Raleigh racer, this time one of the hand-built competition versions with a frame made of 531 tubing, and high quality fittings, wheels, gears, etc. The difference was absolutely amazing as if the thing had sprung suspension. Point is, you get what you pay for, and the right bike can enhance the whole experience, perhaps you would even be encouraged to go out more often, and conversly, the wrong, cheap, bike can spoil the whole experience and put you right off it. Why not buy one or two cycling mags, and do a little research, and maybe trawl the small ads. Could pay off.
