It's not about that. The fact is that I think all children are capable of being extremely naughty once in a while. The question for me would be in regards to whether this was a one off ( in which case their parents should, one would hope, be horrified and deal with it appropriately) If it wasn't a one off, then consider reporting them. Otherwise don't make their lives incredibly difficult because of one mistake.

No, at that age they know that damaging a car is wrong and they deserve to have their lives made difficult or they will just keep doing it. No punishment is a recipe for the sort of feral gangs of children seen on the news but thankfully not witnessed here :T

I would be very careful of reporting it to the police especially if you live on an estate, I reported some locals kids to the police and ended up setting off 6 months of daily vandalism, abuse etc... and at one point social services had to remove me and the kids from the home it got so bad.

I would leave then incident with the scooter for now, yes it was wrong and they should be punished for it but life doesn't work quite like that.

But, that's the thing... if no-one ever does anything then things will never get better; they can only get worse.

Don't get me wrong, I understand how intimidating some environments can be but how will that ever improve if people don't start challenging anti-social behaviour.

Kids have thrown a heavy object at a neighbour's car - the fact that some might say "leave it, they're only kids" or "I won't complain because I don't want any trouble" just means that those kids will never learn that what they have done is unacceptable.

People make up our communities, so if they see something that is not right then they should act on it and not turn a blind eye or leave it to someone else to deal with. That's the only way that estates can change for the better.

Just for clarification the kids involved are at least a year or two younger than my son, 8 or 9 I would say.

So old enough to know that damaging another persons property is wrong.

I'd be round at their parents door as surely anyone who isn't just dragging up their children will be horrified and punish them severely.

and how was the scooter "thrown" at you car? What did the boys who told you this say about that? Did they maybe mean they were walking the scooter past your car and they maybe let the handlebars drop onto the side of your car? Or did they say the boys physically picked up the scooter and threw it at your car?

The boys stood at the top of the drive and threw the scooter at the car. It hit, but I can't see any damage.

if its true and everything has to be proved I would have a word with them or their parents and if anyone complains just ask them how they would like a scooter thrown at their car?

If things arent nipped in the bid they can escalate?

Well that's what i hoped to do but they won't open the door, I put a note through the door but no response as of yet.
  • if they failed to open the door, I doubt very much they are going to respond to a note through the door.

But the kids are 10. TEN years old. Apparently old enough in your eyes to permanently change the course of their lives because of one bit of bad behaviour. I happen to disagree. Talk to the parents, they may well be horrified at what their child has done, in which case they will deal with it. If they are not, then, and only then consider the police.

The same age as Robert Thompson, Jon Venables, and Mary Bell. The age of criminal responsibility. Who all, presumably, started off with "one bit of bad behaviour". Things need to be nipped in the bud.
