Thursday 8th November - What small DFW things will you be doing today?

When we start out on the DFW trail we do loads of "big stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the gym.

But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free.

Examples could be hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending.

So be proud of those small steps, they really are important

  • Thanks for the thread ziggy2407 :money:

    Today I will:
    • Have 13 items ending on ebay, fingers crossed for some good prices.
    • Do some swagging.
    • See if I can do a cinema audit tonight for £10.
    • Pack a bag for the weekend and for going away (with work) next week. No money making for me next week. :(
    • Contact assosia about payment for cinema audits. Try and find my log-in details.
    • Wrap some ebay parcels ready for when I get payments through so I can post on Saturday or leave for a friend to post next week.

    Hi everyone

Thanks for the kick-off Ziggy. And WOW - check your weightloss - how fab you're doing! :D

    My day looks like this:

    · Really need to pay a cheque into the bank - not had time for past 3 days
    · Decide what to knit for pals' babies x 2
    · Crocheted my pooch a toy with yarn from stash - he loves it so far.
    · £3 survey - do on lunch
    · Teach yoga - 3 students tonight; no hall hire due so it's all ok, just petrol expense (as well as my time of course ;) )
    · Drop off/Pick up OH on the way to yoga - saving him bus fare and it's en route
    · Update CV - saw a well-written job description for my type of job - nick and use the same lingo
    · Smile - got an email with approved expenses
    · Bit of free meditation - signed up for this https://www.chopracentermeditation.com/Bestsellers/LandingPage.aspx?BookId=172
    · Look into poss cost of moving if OH gets a fabby job  :D :T - trying not to get hopes up as he's only submitted a cv and spoke to recruitment agent so far…
    · Update details with home insurance people - we have hard wired smoke alarms, windows with locks and securer doors than they stated on the quote they sent - will hopefully lower premium a bit! Also need to check if cost to rebuild makes a difference. They had us down for £800k to rebuild but other sites I saw said £150k! **Does anyone know about home insurance?**

    Lotsa love

Hi everyone. Thanks ziggy for starting the thread

Just the usual stuff for me:
    • Showered using toiletries from recent hotel stay
    • Free parking at local station, then train pass to work
    • Free newspaper at station
    • Free tea/coffee/water at work
    • Check online banking (no surprises)
    • Charge phones at work
    • Dinner from stores
    Have a great day
Debt free since December 2015. It can be done

  • Afternoon all,

Ziggy - thanks for starting us off
La E - fingers crossed for your OH

I am not a happy bunny, got the water bill last night and our dd will be upped from £25 to just over £40 a month

Apparently we are using approx 5-10 more (cubic litres??) per 6 months than we did in our flat. This is clearly atrocious for 2 people. The dd is so large because we have underpaid by about £100 but would still be about £31-32 a month without the underpayments.

I'm fuming and I think I know partly where to point to finger (OH wallowing like a hippo in the [huge] bathtub 2-3 times a week, topping it up with hot water for over 2 hours ) *ahem*

Also, the shower in the new house def puts out more water than in our flat.

    So the plan is:

Showered - didn't wash hair => less time in shower, also save money on leccy for hair dryer. Also realised that you can !!!! (edit - hahahhahah I wrote c*ck the shower handle, like c*ck a gun and mse changed it to !!!! - I wasn't swearing honest!) the shower handle to about half way on, so hopefully used less water.

    Put save-a-flush into ensuite toilet

Shout at OH, poss try limiting to 1 bath per week (or get water bill money out of him - hahaha!!) :p

    Charge phone in work

    Work overtime

Breakfast, lunch and dinner from stores

Used free water out of dehumidifer to put lasagne dish in soak instead of running tap

Check online banking (nothing out of the ordinary)

Think of what I'm going to do with hugh bag of cooking apples kindly donated to me by friend at work (thinking apple chutney and apple and cinnamon butter, poss wine too)

Think that's all, one step forward, two steps back!

PS: Does anyone know of a very cute animal doorstop crochet pattern. My mum wants one for Christmas but all the ones I've seen online don't really look that cute? Thanks!

Howcome you are thinking of moving La e? I thought you moved fairly recently to a bigger house from your flat?

I'm not an expert on home insurance but £800k to rebuild is obscene assuming you are living in a normal house?! The rebuild cost should be lower than the value of the house, that's about as much as I know I'm afraid. Do some comparisons online & some sites suggest the cost for you, £150k sounds a lot better.

    Hi everyone!

Thanks for starting us off Ziggy!
Carrie - Sorry about your water bill, I think there are things you can put in your shower to use less water but I don't know if they're any good or not...sorry that's not very helpful! Perhaps someone else will be along later who can explain better.

    • Declutter & flylady
    • Check for more mystery shopping opportunities
    • Take a photo for NUS card

RFTA said " It's got thread stuck / tangled in the bit where the bottom thread reel goes. The needle doesn't seem to be flowing properly and jams now & then (and the thread sometimes breaks which is probably where it comes from) - it probably needs a good oil."

Is the needle bent? Take it off and put it next to something straight to see.

Is it clogged up with fluff/thread? Take apart the accessible bits and clean them. Take a photo on your mobile before you disassemble anything so you know how to put it back! After de-clogging, apply a little oil.
