Then today an email goes out from a manager saying he is leaving with immediate effect, and won't be back. No explanation given.
Someone else then tells me he's been seen by other people enjoying days out with his family, and has obviously been faking the sick days to get the time off.
He is a family man kind of guy who has a mortgage and kids, so probably hasn't run off backpacking in Nepal. Putting 2 & 2 together he's been canned for faking his sick days.
Is this possible? I thought you'd get a warning or something, or a lot of warnings, but my wife who worked in HR said it would basically be instant gross misconduct; the same as groping or punching a colleague.
that is the main bit,you never know he may have pulled similar stunts,
although if genuine then I am sorry for him,
many years ago I was working in a casino and had a couple of days off because of a black eye(another story)I was seen at a nightclub(with sunglasses on) and my manager phoned me to say he was minded to sack me if I did not come back to work straight away, I duly turned up only to be sent home again but with an apologyIMOJACAR

If you're going to pull a sickie, don't get caught!
Unless you are an MP like Nadine Dorries she swanned off without telling anyone to make more money and she will still be an MP when she get back after making about 40K. But it will be us that will be paying her for her time away while making more money and be more famous.
Nice one if you can get it....:mad:0 -
It is whatever the company says it is...simples.
Who is going to stand in their way or challenge them?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
To many employers, being ill is a punishable offence, let alone faking it! My son has to attend a 'back to work' interview after even one day of sick leave. He is warned every day goes on his record and will have to attend a disciplinary interview to explain his 'poor attendance' if he is I'll again. He has had about 8 days of this year with genuine bugs and sinus infections, but will have to be at death's door before he dares take any more sick leave.
A friend was recovering from a change of medication for a heart condition was told by his GP that he couldn't work but had to take regular exercise for 2 weeks. He was reported by a colleague as he was seen out having a coffee in town and his managers visited him at home and told him he must be housebound if he was certified off sick! They said it set a bad example if he was out and about and his exercise should be confined to walking up and down stairs and strolling around the garden."Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
As per #15 This is true in many companies large or small.
My employer posted an operating profit of £3.5 Billion in 2011/12. they have a sickness policy of more than three occasions and/or 8 days...you get put on a sickness management policy. Also if your sick there are strict parameters for reporting and keeping informed followed by a return to work interview.

Sounds fair enough to me, unless the job was something like a lumberjack.0 -
I don't have any sympathy for the guy if he was chancing a paid day off, in the current climate good jobs are hard to come by and I'm sure there are a good number of other candidates out there that would love a chance at the job without insulting the employer. If you're going to pull a sickie, don't get caught!
Following on from my other point, if you value your job - don't pull a sickie.
I have a pretty good position for a respectable employer, the demand for opportunities in our place is pretty high - if people started taking paid time off unlawfully it's not a clever thing to do.0 -
You also don't know if this was the first time he'd done this. He could have been on a final warning, and that would mean he would just be sacked.0

8 days off for presumably a young chap is very high. The national average is just over 4 with younger people and the private sector typically taking less off. How many occurrences of sick leave have there been?
Employers dont mind someone whos had 2 occasions of sickness and a total of 8 days (using the normal method it scores 32 points) but having say 7 occurrences totaling 8 days is going to look very suspicious (392 points). Of cause it could be true but then they really should look into why they keep getting sick so much and what can be done to avoid it.
To the OP - what do you expect? Employers don't pay you a days salary to go have fun with friends and family unless its agreed holiday. Gross misconduct0 -
