Laptop Dead After Plugging In With Broken & Exposed Cable

Options
As the title says... I plugged in my laptop to charge as the battery was running low, and it just turned off and wouldn't turn on again. I checked the cable (socket to power pack) and it has a break in it with the copper exposed and possibly slightly split. I switched the cable with a different one, and the power pack lights up, but then when I plug the power pack into the laptop, the power pack light flickers. The laptop still doesn't turn on.

I have salvaged the hard drive from the laptop and used a USB caddy to save my data, so obviously the hard drive still works. What is the most likely problem? A fried battery? Or a fried motherboard and CPU? Both?

so you have a new power pack with (1) output of the same voltage as the first (2) same tip polarity (3) same or more wattage or amps as the origional?

Most laptops these days work with no battery, just using the power pack.

I would guess that the cpu is ok, but the power circuitry is often on the motherboard, and the power circuit has probably gone.

It *might* be just a dodgy power pack!

The fact that the light dims / flickers when you plug it in suggests that it's not got enough power to send to the Laptop.

The other problem might be the Power Socket on the laptop, which might be user replaceable.

    What laptop do you have?
I can usually find a Repair manual for it on line and see what bits are replaceable (which means you can probably fix it easily) and which are fixed to the Motherboard (which means expansive repair or dead Laptop)

It is an Asus eee pc netbook.

I have tried the power without the battery in but that doesn't work.

if it not under warranty, not a faulty supply as S0litare said? Think you may have to open it up and use a multimeter. If you know someone else with the same battery, just try theirs and see if your laptop comes on.

Hopefully there is a fuse in side that has blown, while the components still work, but this is often not the case?

This is probably not your problem, however reading it may give you ideas http://forum.eeeuser.com/index.php?/topic/81837-1005ha-broken-because-dc-adapter-with-wrong-polarity/
