Iphone4 IOS6 upgrade

My girlfriend has an Iphone 4 that was purchased off a friend of mine when he upgraded to a 4s. The phone has worked fine until she recently put on the IOS6 software from apple.
Since the software upgrade the phone is constanly turning itself off. i have spoken to apple support who have offered to replace the phone at a cost 126.44!! as the phone is no longer under warranty. As stated the phone worked fine until the upgrade.
any advise or anyone with a similiar problem? cheers guys : )

You could try updating it to ios 6.0.1 the new firmware which came out last week
If that don't work then do as Grumbler said and try an older firmware version.

You can only downgrade to older versions of iOS if you have saved 'SHSH Blobs' for you device for that version, which are signatures from Apples servers which are tied to your device and iOS version.

I upgraded mine but it has had no issues as far a I'm aware. The restriction on what you can do on Apple without actually voiding your warranty make this phone a pile of ..... IMO. I need to try and convince my work into getting the Galaxy s3, or some other phone other than the iphone 5 when they upgrade0

reluctant to upgrade mine, partly for this reason as Apple have a history of ruining my devices when they become outdated0
