I'm going to have a go at the Yacon too next year, but I note that they contain sugars we can't digest, like artichokes, which worries me a bit! More research needed.

As for it being too wet for Oca, this year, mine grew OK, but it looked healthier in the polytunnel than it did outside. The ones planted in big bags in the tunnel are still growing away now, though they're supposed not to do so well when confined. We shall see what's under them in due course, but I guess it could even be late December before I'm harvesting those.

I didn't plan to eat many this year. More a case of building-up stock. Of course, we might not like them....

Well, I found the Oca a bit too lemony/sorrel-like for my liking, but grew them again as this time round for ornamental effect (bees like them and the foilage is lovely too). mine were a pink variety. what colour are yours, Davesnave?

When I get my Yacon, would you like to save money and get some off me for just the cost of postage? I've a friend who's got some in his Poly and will be harvesting them soon.:p

The Yacon can be used to make syrup that I've heard as an alt. to sugar, but I'm not sure how that is made but here's a link -

My Oca are yellowish. If they taste like sorrel that's OK, as we grow that & use it a lot. You are welcome to some yellow tubers if ours crop. We barely had any flowers. :(

That's a very kind offer re the Yacon. I'll PM you. :)

Would like to try yacon but having difficulty in finding a supplier. Can anyone help?
  • JW was saying on Twitter that he was berated by a passerby for advocating plants that can't be grown in UK - while he was standing in a bed full of them!

JJ are you on Twitter - just ask him

I have just dug up the first of the Ocas planted last year. A bit late but that was because of the wet weather. A good crop from both the scarlet and white but the white ones have suffered from slug damage. Scrubbed them to get the mud off and lightly steamed and I must say I will definitely be growing them again this year, they were good.
Will be spreading a few tubers among friends at the allotments so they can try them as well.
Well done James. What shall I try next!!!!

I went a little bit OTT on the suttons website and got...

    Popcorn Fiesta
    Musk Melon
    Electric Daisies
    Cucamelon
    Aspargus Peas
    Radish Rats Tails

    It's a waiting game now!
