Changing ISP

I have been with Virgin for many years but am now following a sales call thinking of changing to BT.

I have been told by BT they will obviously issue new email addresses to us and transfer all our emails from the old address.

I have also been told by Virgin that on closure of the account I will loose my email address.

1. Does this happen straight away or is there a time delay for this?

2. Would I still be able (as I can now) collect emails via their web site online.

3. My wife also has a Virgin email address that she collects via Win. Live Mail & online - how would they know to close her address and could she still continue using her address.

4. They obviously know of my address because it's the contact for the account - if I change the contact address now could my address continue.

5. I have been told by BT that there is a 10mb per month limit (Virgin is uncapped - fair usage) I don't think I use more than 10 but they say if I do on the first month they do nothing the second they write to me and the third they offer a larger download limit - does anyone know how much the next stage is?

10 Gb is low if you do any type of iplayer/video streaming. BT internet is not cheap compared to the competition, apart from the packages like this that makes them appear good value, until you add the penalties on. The next tier is 40GB

I doubt they will be transferring any emails for you

Assume you will lose your email access on termination, it's google email, but they could cut access immediately.

you are unlikely to get the same speed as cable (are you on virgin cable, or virgin national?), unless you use infinity.

I do use iplayer once or twice a week.

I dont really know how long it takes them to close your email address. but i will suggest you open account with gmail(google mail). its free and its not provided by your isp so they do not close it.
you can than change your isp whenever you want without loosing email address.

I think you meant 10GB. Next option is 40GB for 18pounds per month

    Realistically, 10Gb is incredibly limiting.

have you got a bt line already?

Yes I have 2 one with a Dax on it the other without which currently has the Broadband.

One of the advantages (I think) in changing is that BT say they will put the Broadband on the DAX line and remove the DAX - therefore letting me dispose of the other line.

    What do others think?

Would Virgin actually stop the email address if the emails are collected on line - how would they know?
  • Sorry this does not make sense either

How do they do that then it is not possible unless they have hacked into your email

We get new email addresses when we sign up and they give software to divert emails.

I misunderstood , I thought they were going to transfer all your emails , not divert new ones :o

I'd set up a Gmail account and transfer your emails over to them as soon as possible then at least you've got your ewmails if they shut down your email account..

    Saying that...

I'm still waiting for them to shut down my Virgin.net email address!

I joined them when they first started as a dial-up many many years ago (around '97-'98)!
I was a pay-as-you-go dial up and then a monthly contract.

In 2000 I left Virgin.net for Freeserve (which also still have a working email account with) before leaving them to jump on ADSL in 2004.

Think I still have kept every email account i've ever had and they still send / receive mail fine! ^_^ lol

Well you never know if you forgot to tell that girl / guy you had a crush on at that New years party your new email when you changed.... lol ^_^

    1. You'd have to ask Virgin, each ISP has its own policy on emails for ex-customers.

    2. See 1.

    3. Presumably, your wife's address was set up through your account, in which case, see 1.

    4. I'm not sure what you mean. Are we talking email addresses or house addresses? If it's email addresses, then they can just cut you off. They don't need a contact address any more, since you're no longer a customer.

    5. Be aware that 10GB is a "light user" limit. It's OK for email, web surfing and watching the occasional video on YouTube or iPlayer. It's completely inadequate for regular video watching, on-line gaming or big families.

BT's policy is that they will let you off the first month you go over. After that, they charge £5 per 5GB or part thereof that you go over.

If you keep going over, you must either keep paying the surcharge, or upgrade to a higher limit (40GB or unlimited). At this point, you're stuck in a long contract, so you can forget going elsewhere for a better deal.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
