Tiles or Plastic Cladding in Bathroom

What is the current trend, or at least which is better ...

Ceramic tiles to all walls in a bathroom, or
Plastic cladding.

We are about the change the bathroom suite and the existing tiles are to be removed too, so we are basically going to start with a blank canvas.

The walls would probably need replastering after removing the existing tiles, but this may not be needed if we opted for the cladding.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

    Tiles end of...........
  • I've seen a few wall clad bathrooms and imo they look okay, however they always remind me of a caravan and look a little cheap.

That said i'm going to clad my bathroom ceiling, which is currently wooden tongue & groove - The cladding will look better, be easy to clean and won't need painting (plus it won't need repainting / repairing when the upstairs flats bath next leaks!)
  • Urgh I hate tiles & love my black with sparkles bathroom :)

Cladding is not really cheap, the proper stuff costing approx £110 per sheet.
The cost of fitting may be less than tiling costs though.
It depends on the look you want, but I think cladding will never be THE new thing, over tiles. I personally would be happy with it in a shower enc, but not all over the room or over the bath.

well you should be able to tell a bias from my profile, however forgetting business sense its a personal opinion too. from a business point of view we sell some cladding too - i just dont like the stuff.

joints dont make something hard to clean, its the surface that matters. most tiles are impossible or very hard to scratch, mark or stain - cladding, even the expensive stuff is like laminate in that its relatively easy to mark.
Grout joints, like silicon are only a problem if you use the crap stuff from the diy sheds. get a good brand like BAL or granfix and mould wont bother you.

and anyone who fell for the 'get upvc windows, soffits etc, you'll never need to paint them again' a few years ago knows that it doesnt stand the test of time.

the caravan analogy is a good one.

Its all personal opinion, and some people love cladding, but i dont!

BTW budget DIYer - cladding the ceiling isnt a bad idea
  • what kind of cladding are we talking about here ? are you talking about the panels that can look like tiles or the plastic ship lap stuff ?
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.
