One day in London, help me plan it please

Hi, we are getting the Crewe - Euston train on Sunday and arrive in Euston station at 11am our return train is just after 9pm.
We haven't been to London before and are mainly going to look around the shops, go on the eye, and see a few of the main sights (just the ones which are close to the area of the eye/shops)

We then will have something to eat before we get the train home.

Can anyone help me plan our day, is it possible to walk around the main sights? we did consider the open top bus tour, but its going to work out quite expensive for the 5 of us, so I am not to sure.

Any idea's for where we can eat on the sunday tea time around 6.30-7pm that is easy to get a taxi back to Euston station.

Thanks x

What images do you see when you think of London? Big Ben, covent garden, grimy soho, cool Camden, glitzy shopping, the Gherkin/Shard, Hyde park/Buckingham palace, the British musuem, Sloane rangers and posh shops etc....

Just trying to get a feel for what you like. It's not a lot of time, but depending on what you prefer you can have a good day out if you don't try to do everything!

It's pretty easy to walk amongst the sights in London from the Eye you can walk over Westminster Bridge towards Big Ben & the Abby then continue up the road towards Buckingham Place going through St James Park. Then once at Buck House you can either walk past towards Hyde Park or going down the Mall towards Trafalgar Square. From Trafalgar you can then walk either to Lecister Square or Covent Garden.

Covent Garden has some really nice pubs and resturants the Maple Leaf is nice so is the Punch & Judy (pretty good value for money too).

Save money getting a taxi to Euston you can jump on the tube you can walk to Embankment station which is right near Covent Garden that is on the Northern Line (blake one) that'll take you straight through to Euston

Here is a nice walking tour you can do that covers the big ticket items.

Though bear in mind that on Sundays there are often engineering works going on and so not all tube lines are running - check on the tfl website before you go to make sure.

There are several restuarants on Euston Rd between Euston & St Pancras stations (Zizzi etc). This is only a 5 min walk to the station.

You may be better heading to one of these to eat so you are clockwatching less when eating as you don't need to rely on transport.

Not sure what the other restaurants are - but I'm sure others will advise.

Second the advice on walking around the tourist spots - comfy shoes essential for a walking day in London. Even using the tube is a long walk up & down stairs.

    Enjoy!

Thanks very much for all the replies, I will bare everything in mind. Thats very handy to know that there are places to eat close to Euston, we will probably go for this so we can relax and not worry about missing the train home.
Thanks for the tip about the tram engineering works, and the walking route is very helpful, I will print it off :)

  • Should it be a really wet day you can take refuge in the British museum, nearest tube station is Holborn.

There's plenty of eating places on the side streets off Euston Road, between Euston and KX Stations.

The restaurant at the recently-refurbished Novotel, now The Pullman, should be open to non-residents, and might be worth a punt. That's between St Pancras and Euston, an easy walk to the station.

Don't try and fit too much in, plan what you would like to see and take your time. If you miss something it will be there next time.

What time are you on the Eye? Unless you pay extra for fasttrack, the Eye may take longer than you think so you need to factor this time in.

We were on it last week and had a 4pm non fasttrack slot. We arrived at 3pm, queued for 20 minutes to get the boarding ticket, half an hour queuing to get on the Eye then 30 minutes actually on it. Taking into account getting to it and it took about 2 hours.

I agree about the Tube and engineering works, especially at weekends. The buses are frequent and you get to see more. Euston Road has plenty of services which go to the West end.
