Very little software makes use of dual core procesors. I am so happy that someone corrected gary892's wrong information. dual core workd like 2 cpu's they can't be added together to get in this case 3.2Ghz what you have is 2 1.6Ghz procesors. Where this benefits you is that rather than having workd and excel open and running on 1 processor the way it works is that each core could take 1 application each so each app runs better but as if it is running on a 1.6Ghz cpu. yes it is better rather than a 2.1GHz sort of divided in 2 but it certainly doesnt give you a 3.2Ghz cpu.

up untill 2 years ago I had been working with multiple processor systems for years where the PC had 2 or more processors and now they have crammed 2 cores in to 1 cpu. I havn't actually looked in to how vista works but XP home doesnt make use of dual core processors I would expect all versions to support them. you will find that usual processor intesive programs will now start to have dual processor support, but I'm not sure if there are many home user apps that do the ones I was involde in was 3d studio max and autocad rendering really benefited from multiple cpu's

Well my core 2 duo 1.8GHz is way faster than my old 3.4GHz Pentium 4 even on ''non dual core optimized software''

I think that all this is nonsense anyway as there are other factors to take into account when looking at processors such as cache, bus etc. and they make a huge difference to speed as well. You also need to factor in other components in the system. RAM makes a big difference...

All I am saying is that the Dell deal is a very good one for the price regardless of weather Dual Core makes a difference to the speed or not.

Are there still any laptops around that have XP on rather than Vista?

Mike T at HotUKDeals has a list of Dell laptops still available with XP here

This offer seems good value. The best alternative price I can find is £350 without the extended warranty at Ebuyer.

I've never heard of MustHave100 and the website does not support secure transaction processing. Does anyone know if this company is Ok ?

I spotted this post last week and so I e-mailed musthave100.co.uk a number of times with various enquiries (basically trying to see if they were genuine), and I quickly got replies back from their very helpful Customer Services.

I was suitably re-assured and so ordered a HP 510 laptop late last Friday afternoon and it arrived one week later this morning. I received an e-mail last night and it informed me it would be delivered today; a tracking number was also quoted. The laptop was security sealed in the original packaging and the box was very well wrapped in bubble-wrap to protect it.

The free Vista upgrade: While this offer is on you buy Microsoft Vista Home Basic yourself and then submit the receipt - via e-mail is fine. This can then take up to 6 months to be refunded, but I was informed today by their CS that 30 days is more the norm. (Don't forget, it said on their website to allow 3 weeks for delivery of the laptop, but it only took 1.)

The 3 year extended Hewlett Packard warranty: This will be posted out by Royal Mail Next Day Delivery free of charge as soon as musthave100.co.uk get them in stock.

I should mention that the price on their website has been increased to £312 since the original post (which still includes the Vista Home Basic upgrade and the 3 year extended warranty), but there was also a flashing banner ad that still stated that the price of the HP 510 was £299. I mentioned this to CS and they honoured the £299 price. The £299 banner is still there at the time of posting.

It would appear that musthave100.co.uk are a relatively new company who are trying to get off the ground. It has been my experience that they provide an excellent all-round service - fast replies to e-mails from CS, free delivery and perfect goods - I perhaps shouldn't have said the last bit because the laptop is charging up at the moment and I haven't actually turned it on yet!!

I've ordered a laptop on a 48hr del (Sat night). I'll more than happily feedback the site to the forum.

I have had correspondents from a couple of other MSE'ers and they sound like a fairly genuine outfit.

I e-mailed off my receipt for the Vista Basic upgrade last Friday (6 days ago) and I also asked for an update as to when the 3 year warranty is expected.

I've not heard anything back since.....:(

I'll e-mail them again tomorrow if I hear nothing.

I e-mailed MustHave100 today and received a reply 12 minutes later - the same sort of response as I have had in the past. Apparently an e-mail was sent in reply to my e-mail last Friday, but it must have gone adrift somehow. My refund for the Vista upgrade is being processed and the 3 year warranty package is expected in July.

Really? I have recently bought a new Acer Laptop with a 1.66Ghz intel dual core processor and 1Gb of Ram. This replaces a Pentium 4 2Ghz Acer laptop with 768Mb of Ram. I've not run an benchmarks on it, but as I have used the old one for 8 hours a day for 4 years and use the new one similarly with the same software, I can honestly say that there is VERY little difference between the two machines.
