I had the same thing when i flew with Air Canada coming back from Montreal they had me on standby and I had book 9 months before the flight.

I don't think you'll get much in the way of compensation as you didn't suffer any loss

  • I'm a bit surprised your frequent flyer father was upset by this, he must have seen it all before.

Unless you're in the top tiers the frequent flyer memberships are pretty meaningless other than collecting points, in fact my Cat 'Tiddles the Saver' in a member of one such scheme and has his own card, although has not made any bookings yet.

Can this experience be compensated for?

See below link and as already stated, overbooking is the industry norm.

It is also worth noting that if airlines were not permitted to overbook, there would be an inevitable rise in fare prices to compensate. :)

These boards have deteriorated to just one winge about compensation after another. I cant believe someone now wants to claim for NEARLY denied boarding.

I can't believe a supposedly frequent flyer hadn't checked in on line. At the very least you'd think he'd have wanted to secure a seat next to his wife and as a regular flyer would know the risks of leaving it til they got to the airport.

So a totally mis-leading thread title.

    Story basically is

    You booked a flight.
For a short while you thought your parents weren't going to make the flight.
    Then they did.

    Hardly a big deal.
  • I've been in the exact same position. We also had to wait- and we booked and paid 10 months in advance. It doesn't matter whether the OP got on the flight anyway- its the stress leading up to it. I had work to go to- I didn't want to spend a night in Amsterdam. this happened a few years ago and I've never flown KLM since. We fly frequently and I've never had that happen with any other airline.

Ask for 100,000 ff miles per person, if you get any at all, consider it a result.
