Final notice - previous residents, help!

Options
Hi all!

I moved into a flat with my boyfriend in August and we paid Aug-March water.

As is usual we recieve past tennants post, usually we just mark return to sender and leave with everyone else's downstairs.

We had been at home visiting family last week and came back to a letter from Southern Water, which we opened.

On opening it wasn't addressed to us but it was a final notice of an unpaid amount by previous tennants. I have contacted Southern to tell them they no longer live here however they aren't the best at replying.

I was a bit concerned as it says if they don't pay 'proceedings will commence'... they're not going to switch off our water etc?!

Any advice much appreciated.

Thank you :)

If they don't have the previous tenant's new address, they will send it to your address and hope it is forwarded. Eventually they will pass the debt to a Debt Collection Agency.

As long as you registered with Southern Water when you moved in, you have nothing to worry about.
