problem opening attachments

since i upgraded my hotmail to outlook i have been unable to open attachments sent to me in emails. i have to go through the hassle of forwarding the email to a yahoo email and then opening it there. in outlook i click on it and get the box asking if i want to open, save or save as. i click to open and nothing happens. it used to just open on screen before i upgraded.

    Outlook blocks certain file formats as they could potentially be harmful. They are a little over cautious so depending on what version out Outlook you have, try the below if Outlook Express;

    Launch Outlook Express.
    Within Outlook Express click the "Tools" menu, then click "Options."
    Click the "Security" tab.
    Remove the checkmark from the option labeled "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus."
    Click "OK" to save your changes.

    The OP is not using Outlook Express.
    You shouldn't be opening attachments within your email program anyway, for security reasons. Save to the desktop, scan with your AV if necessary, and open from there.
    What sort of attachments are you trying to open? Your OS may have lost the file association, if so open the file from within the relevant application.

    nothing happens if i click to save either. the attachment is a pdf file. like i said i never had a problem with it before. if the file association had been lost wouldnt that mean i wouldnt be able to open it after i forward it to a yahoo email also.
    you say never open in them in an email but the security runs a scan before opening it. i also only open if i am confident i can trust the source.

    it must be something to do with the security settings you have placed on the account - or have you tried different browsers and machines?
    I have switched to outlook and it can handle attachments fine

    Good old Microsoft.
    Now we have Outlook Express, Outlook (add the appropriate Office version) and outlook.com.
    Invariably when someone says they have a problem with Outlook and you ask them which one they're using, they don't know - it's just Outlook!
