Hi so sorry for taking so long to reply.

I basically just told them that i had cancelled the contract as per t's & c's, paid my final bill and then moved home. the adding of the default was the first time I was aware of the debt......which shouldnt have been owed in the first place.

Cut a long story short, the default has not been removed, and I received a cheque for £30 for the hassle :)

    The email is ian.livingston@bt.com

I got a phone call the next day. Do it....you've got nothing to lose and everything to gain! Good luck

I read it as a typo and meant to read 'default has now been removed'?
  • Just an update spoke to BT today and they have arranged to remove the default as a gesture of good will due to it being a small amount.

Could I remind everyone that NO firm is allowed to modify or report your dealings with them to a Credit Reference agency unless you have explicitly agreed to it.

BT cannot arbitrarily decide to report your dealings (or default you for non payment) to third parties without first advising you of their intentions, and giving you the opportunity to object. This is usually done by way of a T&C's change and your right to terminate should you not agree.

If this has been done, and you did not object, you cannot claim it was done unjustly, BUT if you have no knowledge of this (and a number I have spoken to state there has been no notice) you have every right to complain and seek removal.

Should they not, or provide evidence of when you were advised, you complain to the ICO for be unlawful breach of your Data Protection rights. They have the power to enforce removal from the CRA who retains the disputed data.

BT have always reported to the CRAs until they stopped for a few years now they have started reporting old accounts again. So what they are doing is all above board.
