    It's fraud. It's a criminal offence.

Occasionally the postman won't bother surcharging you.

Even less likely the person actually sending the stuff will get caught.

But it doesn't make it right!

I got some seedshare veg seeds and they were sent in a pre pay envelope with my address put on and I didn't get charged. There was a bit of a discussion about it on the chat board there, definatly a grey area- I wouldn't do it!

I was involved in that discussion, and got an intersting message from the person who suggested that this could be done. I also sent a message to the owner of the forum, to clarify, but got no response.

I'm now inclined to resign from the Seed Exchange, as I don't want to be involved in this. Swapping excess seeds is a great idea, but saving money in a potentially fraudulent manner is taking it too far.

I'd be unhappy being involved in a scheme where people are inciting each other to steal off the Post Office and the site owners don't seem to care, too. Wise move, Penelope.
  • Whilst reusing envelopes is fine, labels aren't very environmentally friendly and it's probably better just to recycle than stick a label on which makes future recycling very difficult or impossible.

However I am coming from an environmental perspective rather than the money saving one. Basic envelopes are probably cheaper than labels though...
  • I've done this for years.

I just reuse the envelopes, I don't bother with labels. Cross the address out and write the new one on. (I obviously would use a new envelope if I was applying for a job!).

I use the envelopes from my Goldfish satement all the time, as I pay it online. I just cross anything to do with Goldfish off it, write the address on, and stick a stamp on.

Never been any trouble with delivery.

I've long been re-using junk envelopes, I just stick a lable or glue/tape a post it/piece of paper over the address & add my stamps. Morgan Stanley are a constant source of free evenlopes to me, I have far more than I need! Hubby now uses them to store the gaden seeds he harvests every year too.

On a slightly different but not altogether off topic matter, what do people think about re-using stamps which have escaped franking? Clearly this is fraud & wrong, but I have heard several people say recently that as the post office is so inept at delivering correctly stamped mail anyway then it's karma! (A bit of a stretch of Karma IMHO but I can see what they're getting at!). Is it the post offices' duty to frank & thereby cancel the stamp and if they fail is it their look out if the stamp is re-used?

Personally I`d reuse an unfranked stamp, but sadly I`ve never had one.

I always re-use envelopes. I get quite a few jiffy bags from cd/dvd comp wins and they are quite pricey, so great for re-using.

I thought envelopes couldn't go into the recycling?

In my area we can recycle envelopes but have to remove any plastic windowsfrom them first. I've never thought of re-using return envelopes but will start doing from now on. I agree that it is fraudulent to use these without paying (bad karma!!) and so I will be adding the necesary postage stamp.
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D
