Hi experts, I am on Orange and my contract has another 14 months to go. I was given and Samsung Galaxy s2 phone. Now that EE has come out I want a Galaxy s3 4g phone.

I pay £31 a month . I want to move on to a EE tariff and want Orange to give me a Galxy s3 4G phone.

Any idea how much it would cost me to move?

Note: I dont want a new contract

Even if they agree to move you to another tariff, it will be cheaper for you to sell your S2 and to buy S3 elsewhere than to expect that Orange will offer you a good discount for it. There are absolutely no reasons for them to do this.

If you are past 6 months of your contract (which you are) then you'll need to buy out of your contract (minus 33%) then start again.

    Simples.
I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

I'm sure you do want a gift of a new phone worth £400+ with no new contract commitment, but that's unlikely to happen. You'll need to buy out the deal you are on, and start over.

I would hazard a guess at around £300 to buy out your contract and then take out a new EE contract for the S3.

You may know better, but what I've heard so far was 1/6, i.e. ~16%.
Is it 1/3 when are buying a new more expensive contract?
  • You're mad to upgrade from the S2 to the S3 on 4G!!! Too much money!! Go on a holiday abroad instead!!! Crazyness!! And I used to work for Orange so I know there is not enough difference between the two phones.

With orange, you get 25% off the termination fee if youre staying with orange and just want to upgrade early, and 33% if you want to upgrade early to ee. If you want to leave for another company you pay the full termination fee. Hope this helps.

I am pretty sure it's 1/6 at Orange in this case (so called "no VAT"). At least many people have reported this.
I wonder whether 25% and 33% apply to the ETC "with VAT" or "without".

Sorry yes, not sure on this one as we don't do it in store but I have heard the same as you - discounted due to VAT if you completely cancel.

eta - the early upgrade fee is calculated based on the monthly cost including VAT, so customers dont get the 16% as well as the other discount. Not saying this is the right thing for them to do by the way! Just passing on what I know.
