    Hi Victoria

I wouldn't expect the pasta sauce to work like that, think the cooking time would be too long and the pasta would be mushy.

Also there isn't as much evaporation in a slow cooker as the oven so you'd end up with a pretty wet dish.

It might be possible to cook the sauce a bit then add the pasta fir the last half hour or so, but I don't think it would save you much tome against doing it in the oven.

  • I'm going to buy a slow cooker, I've never had one before so not really sure about size. Had a look on the argos website and reviews say that 3.5 is too small to cook a whole chicken, so I am considering a 6.5 litre. However as a single parent I'm only looking to cook enough for a meal and some to go in the freezer, and was wondering if I didn't fill the bigger SC would it dry out?

It depends on how big a chicken you usually cook, mine is 3.5l and takes up to about 2.5Kg chicken (usually around 2Kg when buying the bargain supermarket offers) which is enough to eat presently and leaves lots to freeze and make soup etc with. You'll be astonished how much actual meat you get off a slow cooked chicken, far more than the same bird roasted. 6.5l is overkill for your needs unless there are 4 of you?

Put one in an hour ago because I forgot to do it overnight! Had meant to use it for lunch and dinner today.

PS not sure if it matters but I suspect an oval SC is better for fitting a chicken.
  • thanks that helps a lot, I will just go with the 3.5 I think. Can't wait to get started and try some of these recipies x
  • Just bought one of these and waiting to start. As mentioned right at the start of this, most receipes seems to want you to brown the meat first. What difference does that make ? Also what level of liquid should be in the pot ? Sorry if the questions are rather basic.
  • You don't need to brown meat first, the only things I brown are meatballs (otherwise they fall apart when you stir) and I cook sausages because of the fat that comes out, otherwise I don't bother. As to liquid use the very minimum as it will not boil off and expecially if you have vegetables in the SC, probably about a mug full is enough for most dishes (in a 3.5l SC). HTH
  • Advice needed Re: Steak and Kidney pudding in a Slow cooker.
Hi I am having a mental block about how to cook the steak & Kidney pie in the slow cooker. I have cooked the meat and thickend it ready to put into 2 small metal containers that i am going to use. Now the thing is do i have to put cling film/grease proof paper loosly over the suet or can i just pop the puddings in the slow cooker uncovered. With water in the Slow cooker obviously. Can anyone help me please. Thanks for any help. I would like to have this tonight for dinner. Sad arn't i with the memory loss.

    Hi HHx

I copied and pasted these from the forum but unfortunately didn't note the posters (apologies to the original posters) - hopefully they will be of some use to you :

Use 2oz pudding rice, 2 ozs sugar with 1 pt milk. Throw it all in, give it a stir, and leave on low for 5 - 6 hrs.
    It's yummy, very creamy.

    Coconut rice pudding.

    1 can of coconut milk
    1.5 pints milk
    5oz pudding rice
    2oz sugar
    1/2oz coconut

shove in slow cooker for about 5 hours.
Serve with a few slices of tinned mango and ice cream

This is a fairly big pud enough for about 8 people but it will all get eaten
