Did a gammon joint in my slow cooker on Sunday with orange juice, black peppercorns and bay leaves + a few chopped up manky carrots :D

Much better cooked that way than in the oven - very moist and tender, with enough left over for gammon, egg & chips for supper last night!

    Might be soup today?

Well in my SC from last midnight because I suddenly realised i had mince I'd forgotten to freeze … about a kilo of bolognese. Had to live through the smells all night every time I woke up!
  • Just been given a slow cooker for Xmas, can't wait to try it out?

Can anyone recommend a simple, tasty, onion free recipe that's good for a beginner? Some sort of curry would be good but all suggestions welcomed..
  • Can anyone recommend me a recipe? I've got a slow cooker at my flat in Leeds (I'm a student) and I like the idea of batch cooking my meals for a week (I can eat the same meal everyday I'm not fussy.) I'm trying to keep my costs down and so If I buy veg and use it all at once it won't go to waste!
I'm thinking something involving quorn mince/ chicken style chunks. Frozen mixed veg, and then I can just make cous cous and have that
    Money money money.

  • This is a recipe I bunged together once and I just love the flavour, it's sweet but really rich and casserole-y at the same time.
    Serves 3
pack of chicken, turkey or beef
    3 cloves garlic
    1 parsnip
    1/2tbsp olive oil
    1 apple
    3 red potatoes
    1 onion
    1 1/2 cubes chicken stock
    2tbsp dry onion gravy mix
    5 carrots
    1/2 cup Orange Juice
    1/4 cup water
    4 sticks celery
    1/4 cup butter
    pinch of salt and pepper
    generous amount of italian herbs

Put it on a low heat in the morning and it should be ready by dinner, or, we usually make it at night, shove it on low and have it ready in the morning (As long as you dont have a lay in... Or it might taste a bit too charcoaly for your liking!)

Not sure if it's thrifty, but it sure is yummy.
  • I was wondering if anyone can help me. I received a 3.3l capacity slow cooker for Christmas, which I'm very excited about. I live alone so would tend to be cooking just for me or me +1.
Is there a standard liquid to meat/veg ratio I should stick to so that stuff doesn't dry out or isn't too sloppy?
Going to search the thread for recipes!
    Thank you in advance.
    Laura.

It depends on what you're cooking. Liquids don't evapourate in the slow cooker, and you tend to get extra liquid from the meat/veg.

For stews, I add enough liquid to barely cover the veg/meat. For joints of meat, I like to add a couple cms liquid to the bottom.

The orange juice looks interesting in there.
  • Hi,

Just trawling through this thread for ideas for my new slow cooker, found some really great ones so far. I haven't made it through everything yet, apologies if this has already been discussed. You know the cheap, rolled breast of lamb you can get in the supermarkets? Would that work in a slow cooker?

    Thanks!
