  • ooh! just noticed you wanted help with liquid proportions too....you will not need any more liquid as the sc produces a lot of condenastion so might be an idea to add some tomato puree along with the can of toms to thicken it a bit...

  • If you are one of those people who doesn't have 'issues' with warm fruit ;):D you could add some chopped apricots. I've also tried adding dates which I liked, but the skins may cause a texture issue for some...

this explains where I went wrong, my first attempt with beef and veg got drowned an a bittle of red to make aure it didnt dry out - tasted fab but was closer to a thick soup than a casserole.
  • I have just bought my first slow cooker from ALDI, alot of recipes say to pre-heat, but the user handbook says do not switch on the cooker if the ceramic pot is empty. Which is correct?

I don't pre-heat mine. I do start it on high for the 1st hour if I will be in the house.
  • Thanks will try that

I bought a SC at the beginning of the year, used it for the slow cooker curry which everyone loves in my family but that's all I've used it for, I'm getting desperate now. We eat mainly veggie meals at home because I'm hopeless at cooking meat, I will cook meat but I need step-by-step instructions. I've scoured the recipes but not sure which to try first. I would love to cook a nice sausage casserole or chilli but haven't a clue, can someone please recommend a simple and very tasty meat dish to get me started on using my slow cooker again.

    Thanks in advance. :D

    Hiya,

There are hundred of threads on here. I can see about four on the first two pages :) Have a look on there and you will get loads of inspiration :)

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=4273 <<< that is the slow cooker recipe collection thread (pg3)

I love to do a whole chicken in mine. I switch it on in the morning and it's ready for me when I get back home. I love it. I'm sure I bore everyone with how great it is, lol. I'm on a crusade! Hehe. But anyway.

With sausages, you can brown them first (but it's not the be all end all if you don't) then put them in the slow cooker with some sliced onions and mushrooms, if you like them. I then used a (shh!!) *whisper* packet *cough* packet? who said packet?! of colemans sausage casserole sauce mix because I got it reduced to 16p.

I'm stil learning myself, so I'm sure someone who is better informed will be along shortly. I hope I gave you a good start :) And keep at it, you will get there :)

I've borrowed my Mums but I'm too nervous to use it! :rotfl:

Will try the sausages. Do you put any liquid in with your chicken?

    Skint_Catt,

Don't be scared...once you have a play with it, you'll love it! I must admit that I'm not mad about whole chicken in the sc, I think it's better roasted, but when I have done it I add some water or stock, an onion, pepper and some herbs in with it.

Have a look through the slow cooker collection that freyasmum has linked to there are lots of great threads there. This one in particular should help with cooking a whole chicken:
