Hi Looyates, many thanks for the advice regarding the soup and broth mix - I've got a bag from last winter (it has actually moved house with me!) that is going to need using up.
Update on my first attempt with the slow-cooker -
Won't use that pot-roast beef again - it turned out stringy - but everything else was delicious. I removed the beef at the end, then some of the root veggies, blitzed them with my 'whizzer', added two spoonfuls of gravy granules (had no cornflour) to the pot, gave a good stir and then put whizzed veggies back in again to thicken followed by the beef cut up into pieces.
I think braising steak or preferably shin beef would have been much nicer in this recipe - but that is just a great excuse to try again :j . May also add some herby-dumplings next time as well as some dried mixed herbs to the whole meal!
Those whizzed veggies would have made great baby food!
mmmmmmm wonder how it would deal with bacon ribs and cabbage? Possibly add the cabbage part-way through cooking time!!
Looks like I will need to really stock up on tinned tomatoes as well - they seem to feature regularly in slow-cooker recipes and best of all - they are CHEAP!0 -
Hi Ollie, I could be wrong but when you say stringy do you mean that when you tried to carve it , it fell apart? If so then its beacuase it has cooked up really tender and I like to shred it a bit like american pulled meat. If thats the case then if you allow the meat to rest a little next time it might make carving a little easier.Boots Card - £17.53, Nectar Points - £15.06 - *Saving for Chrimbo*2015 Savings Fund - £2575.000

Hi Boomdocker - Oh the meat was very tender because it DID fall apart but the length of the fibres in the meat was long and you couldn't cut them across the grain. The pieces of meat took ages to chew through - maybe I should have left them out of the liquid but it seemed to be getting tougher. Maybe just not the right cut of meat for what I wanted
. I'm certain that shin beef or braising steak would have been much nicer.

Morning All,
After spending most of yesterday trawling through this thread I've got severe Slow Cooker Envy!
So have dragged the old thing out of the cupboard, much to the surprise of fiance.
Only problem I'm having is vegetarian recipes, I'm trying to limit the meat intake so I'm concocting a spanish chicken (but with Quorn) dish tonight as I'm at home to put the Quorn in later, but is it ok to put Quorn in at the beginning or will it all break apart?
Anyways, any veggie suggestions, that dont involve courgette hehe, would be appreciated.
And i'm so doing the mulled wine idea at christmas, so thank you to whoever that was, dunno why I didn't think of that before, when struggling to keep it warm last year)
cheers all :T

Really simple sausage casserole recipe which I got off here somewhere. Grill your sausages to part cook and get rid of some fat. Cut in half and put into slow cooker with a tin of beans, a large onion and a beef Oxo cube. Add a bit more water if required, and cook on low for about 4 hours. It is gorgeous :jYou're only young once, but you can be immature forever0 -
She really loves mince that much! hehe
The spanish chicken/quorn thing smell is starting to fill my house!
I'll take your advice and dump the quorn at the end.
thanks!
